Airpods Max lossless Audio Quality

I am trying to figure out how to reach lossless audio quality without the need of having an extra pair of headphones and sacrificing the convenience & comfort of Airpods Max.

Apple says in their lossless audio FAQs that you can listen to lossless audio using Apple’s Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter, but unfortunately, you cannot listen to lossless audio using the AirPods Max Lightning to 3.5mm Audio Cable.

Now, as much as this may sound a bit much, does that mean if I used the combination of Airpods Max + Lightining to 3.5mm Audio Cable + Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter, I could reach lossless audio quality, or there would be a lot a loss in these different conversions.

Another question is, what if I replaced the Apple adapter in this setup with a proper DAC "like THX Onyx", will this result in difference in quality, or it won't matter much. I know that DACs will produce louder sounds for sure, but I am more interested in frequency range and distortion levels.

Hey there O_A_K,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand you have a question regarding listening to lossless quality audio with your AirPods Max. We’ll be happy to help.

“The Lightning to 3.5 mm Audio Cable was designed to allow AirPods Max to connect to analog sources for listening to movies and music. AirPods Max can be connected to devices playing Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless recordings with exceptional audio quality. However, given the analog-to-digital conversion in the cable, the playback will not be completely lossless.”

As for the question regarding a 3rd-party converter, you may want to reach out to the manufacturer to determine the quality they will be able to provide.

Take care.

This is a reiteration to what's already stated in Apple website and in my question above.

I am asking specifically about combining Lightning to 3.5mm Audio Cable + Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter, because the Airpods Max with the audio cable, should be comparable with, if not way better than, other wired headphones in the same price category.
