itunes corrupted download

i have an ipad air that i am continuously getting "software for ipad was corrupted during download". how do i get around this as after 20+ times i'm growing tired of this. it's an apple product using an apple app.... should be as simple as download and update. it attempts to update to ios 12.5.3, which from what i can find is the latest available for this "apple" product. i have made an icloud backup also. any help would be much appreciated.
