AirPods connecting while not in use

When my AirPods are not in use and inside the case, they keep connecting to my phone while I watch YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, etc. This is problematic because whatever I’m watching gets paused while the airpods connect and then the video or show I’m watching is just frozen until the airpods automatically disconnected or when I manually pull down the control panel to change audio source back to phone speaker. This started happening back in December of 2020 and I thought maybe it could be fixed over time with a new software update, but it keeps happening. I’ve tried turning off auto detection on them, but the issue still occurs.

Hello frenchsoymilk,

Thank you for posting on Apple Support Communities.

If your AirPods are connecting to your phone while in the case, this probably means the case is not closing and connecting with the AirPods properly. Firs we recommend you clean out the case and make sure there is nothing that may be interfering with the magnetic connection at the bottom or the lid.

Next, reset the AirPods to factory settings by forgetting them from your iPhone, put AirPods into their case, pop open the case and hold the button on the back for 15 seconds. You will see an orange/amber color light flash, this means they have been reset. Connect the AirPods back and test them to make sure the issue stops.

If the issue persists you may need to contact Apple Support and look into possible repair options.

Good luck!
