OS Big Sur 11.4

11.4 upgrade wiped my contacts and deleted my main Apple email file. Any comments?

Launching Contacts in iMac failed. Specs: iMac 21.5 inch Built in 2010 Processor: 3.06 Ghz Intel Core i3 64-bit Memory: 4GB (2x2GB)1333 16GB MHz DDR3 OS: HighSierra/10.13.6 Problem: On this OS, I never used Contacts. When I open it recently it failed with messages: re-open etc. In System/Library there is no file. How do I reset or re-install or repair? I use Contacts frequently on my MacBookAir instead. In this System/Library there is also no file because I intended to copy from MBA > iMac. I don't use iCloud on iMac. Thanks.

Hey Crusheen,

You can remove the email account from the Mac and then add the account back and test to see if it can receive emails again.

Add or remove email accounts in Mail on Mac

If we understand correctly, you are missing contacts and email after updating to macOS 11.4 We'd be happy to help.

Were you syncing your Mail and Contacts from iCloud?

You may need to enable these in iCloud Settings to get them to return.

"On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Go to Settings > [your name].
Tap iCloud.
Tap to choose which apps you want to use iCloud."

Change your iCloud settings

Hey Crusheen,

Thanks for the update. There are a couple more things you can try that may be able to help.

Are you able to receive emails if you connect to a different Wi-Fi network?

If iCloud Mail isn't working

If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac

Mail server settings for iCloud email clients

Hi Mario,

I was syncing mail and Contacts and they appear on my iCloud account, but they have disappeared from my Mac. when I tried to reinstall, the following message came up; 'Connections to host Automatically added for iOS & OS X Mail on the default ports failed.'

Just checked, my contacts list has returned; Hurrah! but no Mail connection yet

Hi Mario,

Excuse the delay please,

Seems the problem lies with the password. The account will not accept my P/W nor any of the previously used P/Ws, although I can access the mail file; ie, all the previous in and outward mails before the upgrade. Is it possible to link a new account with those files?

I can connect to my mails on the iPhone and on iCloud

Seems to have worked. deleted as suggested and created a new account.

Account returned as 'iCloud' and receiving but can't send out mails yet. Still, thankful for small mercies, I'll plod on and perhaps? I'll get further.
