HomePod Brick Issue

I have the opportunity to buy a HomePod that has been bricked it has the stickers and box and everything that came with it...I read online that these can be fixed by sending them to Apple for replacement, do you need to provide a proof of purchase or will they simply replace what ever comes in? Any response is much appreciated thank you
