My iphone dcim folder structure has changed

You don’t know why what? My format is back to month/year and that’s the problem. I don’t want it that way was my point. My photos are organized specifically in order for photography editing purposes, not in what month they were edited and then saved.

Ok good for a lot of users! not good for users who don't like changes!

Make options for users apple!

This is a fantastic change when you want to look for folders and you can use the year-month to find it... the other method is for computers... not people...

Really would like the option of choosing how the phone names and organizes the picture folders. I loved seeing them organized by date. PLEASE bring that back

year-month the only way. mac persistently disables users.

Has anyone else resolved this issue because this exact thing just happened to me, however I updated to 15.1 and it hasn’t fixed it?

I have 15.1 and (happily for me) my files are back to Month/Year folders. Sorry - no idea why yours hasn't.

I cannot find any official mentions of this on iOS release notes or Apple documentation. I see the same thing on my device running iOS 14.6.

I do see all EXIF properties when transferring HEIC photos on my Windows PC. I have "Keep Originals" set on the "Transfer to Mac or PC" option in Photos). Perhaps EXIF data is stripped when converting to JPEG? I haven't tried it myself.

It happened with iOS 14, because Apple organized photos to support Apple’s photo apps, and doesn’t expect you to ever look at the folder structure on the phone; you should be using the recommended transfer methods described here→Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

you'll want to change windows import settings. right click "apple iphone" device when plugged in and select "show more options" - then "import pictures and videos", then "more options"/bottom left, then play with "import settings" for file/folder name.

I understand your frustration, as many people are having the same issue. You will be told on here by certain persons that it is "your fault, you should have never been accessing photos that way, it's not approved". But that's a load of you know what.

I agree that the year-month could be easier to use, if you happen to know the date of the photo you are looking for; however for me, it created at least twice as many folders, so if I am searching for a photo I now have to click many more folders.

So many people on this forum seem to have never used a real camera; this is the exact format of every other camera, e.g. 100CANON, 101CANON, etc., when you access the storage card.

As for Android, I guarantee that it is not any better; it stores photos in the same 100,101,102 format as well. Actually, my wife has an Android, and I find it quite confounding, because there isn't just one DCIM folder, there are multiple different places on the phone you have to search if you want to find all the photos, screenshots, etc. (double that if you have an expansion sim card too). I positively dread any time she asks me to backup her photos.

It’s not helping that Apple kept changing its folder structure. It’s making my regular backup tedious, I end up backing up all folders in a separate folder, instead of just adding to the old folders on my PC/EHD. But I could not delete the old files because the latest DCIM folders are not complete because I already deleted photos from my phone to save space. And now, while it is back to the year_month structure (which I hate), the folders kept renaming themselves (with additional letters and files transferring from one folder to another) when I had to reconnect the phone because somehow, Apple keeps crashing when I try to copy photos to my Windows PC (which has been that way for some years now). Seriously, just stick to one structure or at least give us the option to select which to use as default. And please fix your compatibility with Windows so that the connection doesn’t crash mid-backup.

I liked the monthly folders also. It helps when Windows has problems downloading pictures off my phone. Bring them back!
