Too Many Photos After Migration from iPhoto

I've just migrated a library from iPhoto. In iPhoto there are 9,172 photos. In the new Photos library there are 10,357.

Can anyone tell me why the Photos album has so many more photos. I tried repairing the iPhoto album and then migrating again with the same result.

Should I be concerned that there are issues with the new library?

Thanks for any insights.

A couple possibilities come to mind:

1) Problem--Photos are somehow being duplicated during import. Solved--you can get plenty of apps from the App Store to clean up (PhotoSweeper comes to mind).

2) Problem--You have inadvertently merged two libraries and are importing them all to Photos. Solved--Make sure you are importing one library, and nothing else in there Finder.

3) You already had photos in you library before you brought in the iPhotos. Solved--Clean your library and import again.

hope this helps! #Psalm93

I used PhotoSweeper to look for duplicate photos in Photos. (Thank you ZacisBac.) It flagged nearly 70 pairs that were actually the same file name (so the same file, twice in Photos) that were NOT present in iPhoto. [There were actually another dozen or so similar pairs that were also in iPhoto.]

These photos were all in 3 dates so I did a side-by-side comparison of the pictures in Photos & iPhotos and came up with another bunch of images in Photos only.

It does appear as if iPhoto must not have actually deleted the photo file when it "deleted" it from the DB.

I've found 193 images to delete – and am down to 10,164 (from 10,357) in Photos. (iPhoto has 9,172)

I think the only way to find the others is to walk through both programs side-by-side and at 10,000+ images I guess I'll just re-delete the images in Photos as I come across them.

I suppose there may be other reasons Photos has more images but I'm just going say this is solved. Thank you léonie.

There are a few possible reasons. Usually the number of photos and videos should be the same in both libraries, but Photos and iPhoto are counting RAW&JPEG pairs differently, in Photos they are only one photo, in iPhoto two.

When Photos is converting the li ray to a Photos Library, it may recover items, that have not been properly deleted in iPhoto and no longer linked to a thumbnail. These recovered items may account for a larger number of photos in Photos.
