HP Printer scan option doesn't show up on my iMac

I recently downloaded the new MacOS (Big Sur 11.4) to my iMac; and for some reason I lost the scanner function on my HP LaserJet Pro MFP 475dw. I tried everything that the HP website suggested to repair, which only made it worse; the system preferences don’t even show a scan function anymore when I downloaded the recommended new driver, and their recommended HP-Smart program doesn’t recognize a scanner either; I’m frustrated. Suggestions?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.4

Don't ever install any drivers from HP.

  1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select the printer, and hit "-".
  2. Now, restart the printer and Mac.
  3. Go back to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, hit "+", and re-add the printer.
