Just to double check, did you also verify that you have both devices set up correctly as shown in article, Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other devices?
We'd like to know, has this feature worked for you previously, or is this your first time setting it up for use? Since discovering the feature isn't working as it should, have you tried restarting both your iPhone and Mac? If you haven't, please give that a try.

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
Let us know if there is any change after restarting your devices, and we'll go from there.
