iMessage contact photo persists at top of Message display

I received a text from a personal contact today at the same time I received a phone call from a work colleague. Now, the contact's name and profile photo are stuck at the top of the Message display, even though I have had several other chats with different contacts in the meantime. And yes, I have restarted the phone (iPhone 7, iOS14.6).

1) How do I restore the expected display (the standard list of messages and chats)?

2) Why is this happening?

Thanks in advance...

iPhone 7, iOS 14

Hi DrJoeH,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. We understand that one contact's name and photo are visible at the top of the Messages app, so we'd like to share some information with you. Restarting your iPhone was a good first step to try. If the message is pinned, open the Messages app, then tap "Edit". From there, select "Edit Pins", and tap the minus symbol next to the contact name and photo. Learn more about this feature here: Use Messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Although the title of this article doesn't mention the issue, the steps may help to resolve the behavior you've noticed if the message isn't pinned: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open.

Take care.
