My iPad Pro 2018 exploded in my hands

My iPad Pro 2018 literally exploded in my hands, even the magnetic has lifted, I went to the apple store and they absolutely don’t know what happened, they don’t offer no options to repair except that I buy a new one, but what happened is just dangerous and I have no explanations for that. I see I’m not the only one to occur in this bad episode. Please let me know .

I think you gave a little more insight in this statement beyond “exploded in my hands” if you’re saying your experience is like others you have seen with glass cracking/breaking due to overheating. If you have contacted Apple support (not your local store) about this issue did they not ask you to send it in to be inspected? Under normal circumstances any issue with a safety concern would require them physically inspecting the device to determine what could have happened. On that front it’s not unheard of for the store to say it needs to be sent in to Apple if they don’t have the capability to do a thorough internal inspection. Call Apple directly (again, not a local store). Escalate the issue. But posting on here unfortunately won’t garner much other than comments from fellow users and it’s not an accurate depiction of how many “testimonies” you will be able to collect unfortunately. I would assume you still actually have the device in question if you’re posting about it. If you could, it would be helpful (as far as for others who may experience what you have) to share photos of your device. You would want to document that anyway for your records if you plan to pursue this further along with of course being able to present the physical device. Did you do another post with an issue you’re having with the 2021 iPad purchased to replace this one? If so, use the camera on it or your phone (or any other camera you have) so you can thoroughly document the seeable damage and go forward. Good luck.

Yeah,

I cam see where the iPad Pro opened up and the glass lifted up considerably.

Is the entire glass completely shattered?

It looks it but hard to tell from that angle.

You should post an image of the fromt of this iPad Pro.

So, the iPad somehow opened up from that area and shattered the glass from the place where the Apple Pencil mounts.

That is indeed very strange and unusual.

That looks like the point of failure as there is a high ridge point there.

I am wondering, myself, if the internal, battery expanded to cause that opening and actually lifted the glass up of the back aluminium chassis.

It looks as if it actually opened up the side of the aluminium case around where the Pencil charging pad is.

I have no clue.

I have gotten different support personnel, as well.

These initial support personnel are mostly “first tier” support.

You would be well advised to kindly and calmly ask these initial support personnel if their are any higher tier, senior or engineer support personnel that your exploding iPad experience can be escalated up to and reported.

You may have to be more insistent, please stay cool and calm when doing so.

Let the 1st tier support personnel know that you are serious and need to be taken seriously and explain that this iPad explosion could have caused you personal injury, potential fire risk and risk to your personal property.

You need to calmly find out if your near iPad injury experience can be escalated and reported to more senior or engineering Apple customer support.

Yup.

I got it!

I completely understand what has happened here.

You need to stay on top of this and continue to try to reach main Apple support and get to higher level tier support.

Something happened inside of this iPad Pro.

Keep making these efforts to get though to Apple call contact support and get a case number for this incident.

A serious issue happened inside of this iPad Pro.

By any chance, was the iPad Pro plugged into power and trying to charge when this happened?

Did you attempt to actually call contact Apple directly via the call number contact list link I, also, provided?

There are Apple employees, working from home, that take calls from customers.

Did you actually attempt to call Apple and speak to a living, breathing human being/Apple employee?

I have called Apple on many occasions since the time many States have lifted the CoVid restrictions.

Many of the Apple call contact numbers should put you in touch with a real Apple emoloyee.

You need to keep calling and staying on top of this.

Keep calling Apple until you can get beyond 1st tier customer support level if they continue to shown no real concern or apathy.

I posted a post to the Apple Support Community moderators about your iPad issue and so far they haven't posted here with any new info or ways/procedures/help you can put to use and maybe contact/reach other higher Apple customer/product support personnel.

This does not look as bad as you have been describing though.

Would you agree?

Not really an exploded device?

Did this iPad make any type of noise when this happened?

Did this feel like an internal explosion when this iPad was being held in your hands?

Jun 26, 2021 12:00 PM in response to nicolefromto

No.

I don't think an iPad would heat up to such an extent just trying to look for a WiFi signal.

Something overheated inside of that iPad serious enough to push up and burst the side of your iPad and cause the widespread screen crack.

You need to keep trying ( NOT every hour of everyday, but stay diligent on this ).

Apple NEEDS to know about this and something may, or may not come out of this for you.

No guarantees, but Apple needs to be made aware of this.

Apple will then make a decision on what action/s they will choose to take.

Whatever the final outcome, this will be Apple's final decision.

I offer the best of luck to you!

I’m not sure what else to tell you to try either other than just keep moving up the chain of command.

I want to be clear about something. When things like this happen, I think it’s human nature to take what people say with a grain of salt. On top of that, without being able to see the device, no matter how well you describe what happened, its difficult to make an informed assessment. I would want to report it to Apple because it could be a possible safety issue. What Apple decides to do is between you and Apple.

I don’t want to give you the impression that I don’t believe you, but I’m saying that I also concerned about what could be involved safety wise. It’s not like there are lost of complaints about devices exploding in peoples hands, but if it does happen for some reason, Apple needs to know about it.

I think it is necessary to inform and above all to collect as many testimonies as possible, I was told that until now it had never happened and instead looking right here I found other testimonies of broken glass due to overheating, I think it is right to collect testimonies, in addition to the fact that I was clearly told that to do thorough checks on what happened they should open the iPad but it is not a service that they do in apple stores and they cannot open it, so they cannot verify the reason for the damage
