I'm not sure if a plain .numbers file is readable by Excel, but I do know you can create an Excel version of your document in Numbers. Open your document on your Mac, choose Export To>Excel. Then adjust the options as you wish and fly away!

Yes and No.

Documents saved as .numbers files cannot be opened in Excel.

Documents exported as .xlsx are translated by Numbers to an MS Excel format, then saved as .xlsx files, which are openable by MS Excel.

Note that any feature supported in Numbers, but not supported in Excel will not survive the translation, but will be replaced by the most recent result of the formula using that feature.

Translation in the opposite direction is also done by Numbers, and has similar limitations regarding features included in Excel, but not supported in Numbers.

If you are doing frequent exchanges with Excel users, and require accurate transfers in both directions, consider LibreOffice, an Open Source application free to download, install and use on your Mac, designed to more completely cover Excel's features (and those of MS Word).

For best compatibility, you may need to use MS Excel for Macintosh, available as a one time purchase in the MS Office Mac 2019 edition.

Barry
