Moved 400GB fcp bundle file to trash, emptied trash, but space not freed. What gives?

I moved my fcp library to a different drive, and trashed the old one.

Emptied trash, but volume still has all its space used.

How can this be?

Using APFS on SSD external drive.

Am assuming that you are looking at the numbers in the bottom of the Finder window. My understanding, from my own experience with a similar issue, is that the drive space is free, it just does not look that way due to something called purgeable space. As soon as you try to load something onto the drive the system will wipe the purgeable space and you will have the free space back.
