MacBook Pro has "Global Reset" error on every reboot

My MacBook Pro has a "Global Reset" error on every reboot since a few days. The exact error message in the error report:

Global Reset

GRC0 = 0x00000400

GRC1 = 0x00010001

I recovered macOS and did all updates, but the error is still present. I cannot find anything about the error codes above. What is the problem?

I believe I have the same problem. Started after I upgraded to Big Sur.

Every time I restart, it hangs during the restart (with a multi-language error message written in grey on black background) and then restarts again. When the computer is finally started I get the exact same "Global Reset" error message as you.

If I turn off the computer, it seems like it doesn't fully shut down, because every time I start it again, it won't respond, so I have to hold down the power button for ten seconds after which it is fully turned off. After that, I can start the computer again.

These problems happen every time.

I have narrowed down the problem a bit - it seems like this happens only when I have two displays attached to my Thunderbolt 3 Dock (which I always have). I can have each Display connected individually without any problems, but as soon as both are connected I get the "Global Reset".

I have tried everything that I can think of without any luck, including

  • Disconnecting all other peripherals
  • Going through all possible settings on the displays, such as DisplayPort 1.2 On/Off etc.
  • Using different cables for the Displays
  • Switching to different ports on the Displays
  • Testing all four Thunderbolt 3 ports on my MacBook Pro
  • Using a different Thunderbolt 3 Cable
  • Doing a complete fresh reinstall of macOS Big Sur
  • I even bought a new Thunderbolt 3 Dock (switched from Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD to CalDigit TS3 Plus), which now appears to be a complete waste of money as the problem remains.

The only options I still haven't tried is to buy a new computer or buy 1-2 new displays, but for obvious reasons I would like to avoid that.

This seems to be a serious bug in Big Sur as everything has worked perfectly well before I upgraded.

My hardware:

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2018 - 2.7GHz Quad-Core i7, 16GB RAM, Intel Iris Plus 655 GPU)
  • Display 1: Dell UltraSharp U2515H
  • Display 2: Dell UltraSharp U2520D
  • CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock (also tried with Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD)

The only consolation is that I'm not the only one with this set up / reset problem- I have done much of the same testing as described here - reseting and reconfiguring to no avail.

It is frustrating that Apple has not addressed this particularly since most people probably have an after market 2nd monitor connected to their PRO when not traveling. Having to hold and reset the unit to get it to turn on happened after upgrading to Big Sur as well.

Given that my MacBook Pro 13" 2.8GHz Corei7 processor w/Intel Graphics connected to Dell U3219Q display was purchased in 2019, I doubt I will get any attention with Apple, if anyone has a newer Mac or an extended warranty - please update the forum with any solutions from Apple~ In the mean time I am now motivated to cycle out of this set up and upgrade to a new system next year - and giving serious consideration to jumping off the Apple bandwagon.

I have this question, too.

MacBook Pro 2019, four TB3 ports, 13-inch

macOS Big Sur 11.6

Two displays connected one by USB-C to Displayport one by Displayport, using two Asus VN279 monitors.

I thought it was an issue of the TB3-Dock, so I changed from Icy Box TB3-Dock to CalDigit TB3-Dock, same error: Kernel Panic on reboot, error code:

Global Reset

GRC0 = 0x00000400

GRC1 = 0x00010001

@der_schmidt

I get exactly the same behaviour:

When I shut down, or try to reboot the MacBook Pro (13" i5 2019, 4xTB-Ports) the screen goes black, but nothing happens. I have to kill all processes by holding down the power -button twice: First to really turn it off, 2nd to start it again.

The only way to get a clean shutdown or restart, is to unplug the monitors/TB-Dock (by unplugging the tb-cable from the mac), then shut down or restart.

Not to throw a wrench into the sleuthing… but I just got this error message. I am using my iMac (2020) and am on the Monterey 12.0.1 OS. My computer wouldn’t start yesterday, even holding the button. Today, I tried again before calling AppleCare and it started with a hard reset, but I got that same multi-language error before restart and then the error pop up with the Global Reset.

I have nothing connected to my Mac besides my printer, keyboard and trackpad (all Bluetooth.).

I have the exact same issue as described above. Two Dell 2419HC monitors connected to my 2019 MacBook Pro 13" with 4 thunderbolt ports. I have one monitor connected via USB-C and another via HDMI (using Apple's dongle). I spent hours yesterday with Apple support on the phone, we tried many things, recover MacOS, tested hardware and all is working well. I was getting very frustrated, but thank you for this post, this helps a lot knowing it is a Big Sur issue.

Thanks
