I am travelling abroad and will need to use a local sim card in my phone. I have a iphone xr purchased sim free from Argos. Will the phone work with the local sim?

Yes, it should be able to use any cellular provider's SIM card in an unlocked phone. Of course, that card would have to physically fit into your phone.
