What to Try:

A. Disable Bluetooth:

See what happens when you disable the Bluetooth. There might be a conflict between devices.

B. Resetting the Core Audio:

Type the following command in Terminal:

sudo killall coreaudiod

To get to Terminal go to: Applications > Utilities > Terminal

C. Single Out this User:

For temporary use and troubleshooting purposes, create a new Administrator User, seeing if all shows up as it should. If so, then it is likely an issue with the current user itself. Once determined, delete this Administrator User.

D. Screenshare to Show Apple:

Based on what you mentioned, this is something you need to share with Apple Support. You would use the iSight Camera on your iPhone or Mac to perform the screenshare all of this. Simply hover the iSight camera over this so show the Apple Rep this over the phone. Use with of these links:

Apple’s Contact Information:

Note: Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due do lots of calls. And that makes sense, because with the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get thorough :)

Update:

This problem was fixed for me until yesterday. I tried the established solution and it worked again!

For those of you not understanding the solution from the thread, here it is:

1. Quit photobooth (I'm not sure if this is necessary)

2. Locate to the applications folder and find Photobooth

3. Right-click on the icon and press "duplicate"

4. Check if the copy works (it should work)

5. Quit the copy, move it to the trash and now open the original app... it should be working fine now

If this doesn't work for you, I apologize. Try contacting Apple or refer to the solutions in the thread below. hisuzie here ii used and it worked ok still had appointment at genius so adviser tried some other things after we were able to eliminate external possibilities. he found the output one the sound graph was auto defaulting to highest so gains were causing screeching so lowered and was better. he then did some thing else in backroom and then it seemed ok as well, but back home was not consistent so I will take in again to apple store . it seems internal and so maybe back to factory??
