iPad wont autocapitalise ‘I’ unless I resets the keyboard dictionary regularly

I am regularly having to reset the keyboard dictionary on my iPad Pro (used with Magic Keyboard) so it auto-capitalises the letter “I.”

After a day or so, it reverts back to lower case. No amount of trying to get the iPad to ‘learn’ it should be capitalised seems to work.

Anyone else had this problem and found a way to fix it once and for all? I did a factory reset some time back which resolved but it seems to have come back now. Very annoying.

Hello, Apple_OliB.

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're trying to get your iPad to automatically capitalize the letter "I" - and you're able to achieve this by reseting your keyboard - but it invariably goes back to typing a lowercase "i" after a few days.

If resetting the keyboard temporarily resolves the issue, your iPad keyboard may be learning from your suggestions. For example, if you reset the keyboard and it's capitalizing the "I" but switches back, do you ever purposely correct the uppercase "I" to a lowercase "i" when you type? After the first few times you do this, if you're using Auto-Correct and Predictive at Settings > General > Keyboards, it will learn from your suggestions.

Try either enabling "Auto-Capitalization" to always capitalize the "I" or disable Auto-Correction to see if it helps.

Warmest Regards.

Oliver,

If it's only happening for the Magic Keyboard, and this may be an issue where you'll need more advanced guidance from Apple Support. The fact that is is temporarily resolved after resetting the settings lets us know the issue is likely with the software or communication between your Magic Keyboard and iPad. You might see if disabling Auto-Capitalization and/or Auto-Correction for the external keyboard only resolves the issue for you. That will at least let you narrow it down and possibly resolve the issue until you can work with Apple Support for a more permanent resolution.

Oliver,

You're very welcome! We can't think of any other causes, but maybe the answers to a few more questions will shed some light on it for us.

Does it only happen with the Magic Keyboard, or does typing on the built-in keyboard on your iPad also revert back to lowercase letter?

Which keyboards do you have installed when you go to Settings > General > Keyboards on your iPad?

You mentioned that you did a factory reset, do you recall any maintenance or other tasks you may have executed on your iPad that correspond with when the issue started again? Some examples might be:

  • Updating or restoring the iOS software
  • Installing an app or profile
  • Logging out of or in to an Apple ID in iCloud

Have you tried any other troubleshooting other than resetting your keyboard this time?

If you have other Apple devices using the same iCloud account, does it do the same thing there?

We look forward to learning more.

Hi,

It only happens with the magic keyboard, yes, if I type with the built in touchscreen keyboard it does the auto-capitalise.

If I go to setting, I see English (UK) against keyboard and then if I hit hardware keyboard it shows English (UK) > British.

I haven’t tried any other remedial actions beyond resetting the keyboard which works temporarily and then switches back to not auto capitalising ‘I’. It does auto correct other things like “dont” to “don’t”

I don’t have any other Apple devices which fit the Magic Keyboard, just my 2020 iPad Pro 11”. No issues on my phone for example, using the built in keyboard.

Thanks … look forward to hearing back.
