Connecting a Dell External Monitor to my MacBook Pro

I am trying to connect my Dell monitor P19175 to my MacBook Pro (13 inch, 2018) running Big Sur v11.4 with an HDMI cable. I recently purchased Apple USB-C to Digital AV multipart adapter at the recommendation of Apple Support to accomplish this task. I have restarted the machine. I have also gone into Displays in the System preferences and held the Option key to "Detect Displays." However, the monitor says there is "no HDMI signal from your device." The Input Source is correct. What am I doing wrong? I Have read about stacking adapters, but I only have the one adapter recommended. Thanks in advance.

Hi John b,

The HDMI cable works with an older mac mini. I turned off both devices, replugged the HDMI cable and USB-C to Digital AV to my monitor and MacBook Pro, and then restarted. It still doesn't work, and Detect Display does not detect any display. I guess my next option is to return the USB-C to Digital AV multiport adapter, if I am allowed and get a USB C to display port cable as you recommended. I will try this route and let you know. Does anyone else have any suggestions I haven't tried?

Hmmm… the dell monitor supports hdmi 1.4 displayport 1. 2 and vga, plus it has a usb connection for charging.. the latest version of the adapter supports hdmi 2.0. The older version, hdmi 1.4… You might have a bad HDMI cable … try another one…. Video output should be set to hdmi… here’s something helpful: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204388

please note that hdmi is not swappable. All connections/ changes to connnections must be made when both the mac and monitor are turned off. You could try this usb-c to displayport cable ? https://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-More-Gray/dp/B075V27G2R.. it’s only 6 feet long though…

and this usb-c to hdmi cable: https://www.amazon.ca/UGREEN-Thunderbolt-Converter-ZenBook3-Chromebook/dp/B07BPSSW8N/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIwf-Snu3l8QIVEgnnCh3UywVXEAAYASAAEgJD8PD_BwE&hvadid=229978695033&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9061281&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=2384834804970840411&hvtargid=kwd-306956640366&hydadcr=1506_10289905&keywords=usb-c+to+hdmi+cable&qid=1626378828&sr=8-10

when it comes to cables, i have found that monoprice gives good value for money. And they have free US shipping.. eg : https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=24440

hope this sorta helps you
