Why does the text message app icon show notifications for muted texts? So whack.

Why does the text message app icon show notifications for muted texts? What is the point of muting a text thread if the app is still going to signal me about a message I don’t want to be disturbed by? It’s not truly muted if I have to open the text and see the opening line of the very thread I sought to mute.

I see that someone started a prior discussion about this and 120 people clicked “me too”, and that, at the poster’s behest, several members including myself submitted feedback to Apple about it. Please remedy this, Apple.

I’m asking this about my iPhone 11 V14.6 - the same device I’m typing this on, though that option is not listed following the question “what device this is about”.
