Bullet points Pages

I have often used a style or format for bullet point lists called "List 1." It's a deeper indent, and perhaps slightly smaller size, than the standard bullet. However, today when I wanted to use that style, the bullets and lists menu in the sidebar didn't show it; the only choices are bullet and bullet big. Surely I'm not imagining that for years I've chosen "list 1." I can see that a list using "bullet" does not look the same as one elsewhere in the same document using "bullet 1." Was this a new style I created so long ago I don't remember? And altogether, I'd swear the list of options under bullets and lists was much longer than the 9 items I now see, including "none," andnd I think it included not only a "list 1" but possibly "list 2, 3," etc., and multiple options for other ways in which you could mark items in a list.

I created a new list in a new document just to see if the formatting issue had something to do with the document I'd been trying to edit, in which there are a series of lists, all using "list 1" style bullets, but the options in the text sidebar for bullets and lists were the same: no "list 1." I also opened a new document on a different MacBook and created a list there to see if there was some quirk pertaining to my much newer MacBook, where I had been editing the original document, but the bullets/lists options were the same. What's going on?

It is likely that you created List 1 as a custom style. Custom styles do not become universal over all your Pages documents.

A custom style belongs only to that document (and any documents created from that document by Duplicate or Save As, or from a custom template containing that style.)

Open any document that contains List 1 as a custom style.

Select any paragraph that shows List 1 and Copy.

Open a document where you want that style and Paste.

With the cursor anywhere in that paragraph, the List 1 will show under Bullets & Lists:

Click to open the Pop-Up Menu:

Click on the plus sign (top right):

Press enter to add that style to the document.

Save as Template for future use.

Regards,

Ian.

Hello NJM55,

Thanks for posting to the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you described, you are looking for an option under Bullets & Lists that no longer appears or doesn't save when you create a custom list.

Since you tried it on a different MacBook, you could try seeing if the same thing happens while editing a Pages document in safe mode on one of the Mac computers: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Thanks and have a wonderful day.
