No Startup Chime following update to MacOS Big Sur Version 11.5. Apple Support article HT211996

No Startup Chime following update to MacOS Big Sur Version 11.5.

The StartUp Chime worked MacOS Big Sur Version 11.4, prior to the upgrade.

Apple Support article HT211996 does not help in resolving the issue.

Anyone else experienced the same issue and is there a Solution someone has successfully implemented?

Good news Guys. Problem Solved. [Apologies for the Long Reply]

When I tried to Reinstall MacOS, an error message came up, stating that I needed an extra 2.4G to Reinstall the MacOS. I moved a number of items from the MacBook HDD onto an External Drive and tried again several times having moved more and more items, each time, of the MacBook HDD to the External Drive. Each time I attempted this, the same error, kept coming up, however, curiously the amount of Space required to Reinstall MacOS, kept going up, e.g. 5.7G and then 7G etc.

In the end , having read the Apple Support document HT204904 [How to reinstall macOS], in detail, it became apparent that I needed to erase the HDD in order to proceed.

Having Backed Up my MacBook, using TimeMachine, I proceeded to Erase the HDD as detailed in the Apple Support Document HT208496 [How to erase an Intel-based Mac]. I successfully erased the HDD, Reinstalled MacOS and using the Last Backup Restored my Data to the MacBook Pro. In the end the process is quite painless, but did take nearly 2 Hours to complete [over a 1Gig internet].

I would like thank you all for the Diagnostic Support provided by you guys and would also like to acknowledge and thank Jamie, Kathleen and Alison from the Apple Support Team for all their help and the Support Articles Provide by them.

first try the NVRAM and SMC resets as suggested by dialabrain.

if that doesn't work, you can try this terminal command: (copy and paste)

sudo nvram StartupMute=%00

and enter your admin password when prompted. also, you may need to first turn it off using this command:

sudo nvram StartupMute=%01

and then turn it back on with the first command.

Same problem here. Startup sound stopped working after update to 11.5

Setting 'sudo nvram StartupMute=%00' does not help at all, neither does resetting the SMC. Only after resetting NVRAM/PRAM the startup sound is back. However, unfortunately this is for one system start only. Then the chime is gone again.

Any other ideas?

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all your input so far.

None of the solutions you have suggested have worked so far.

Next Step is to attempt Big Sur Re-Install.

Curiously, when I attempted this earlier today, I had to abort the attempt as there wasn’t enough disk space. After shutdown, when I powered up again, the Chime was back, temporarily, as the next time I powered up the Mac, alas no Chime again. 😡😡

Hi Josixpack,

same here, updated to Big Sur 11.5.1, earlier today and the Chime is still there.

PS Before the Erase, Reinstall the System Report and the Storage showed that just over 22G was available. Following the Restore, same reports now show over 300G of storage space is now available, even after upgrading to Big Sur 11.5.1

so in my the the Restore was the best option.
