Password protection in Numbers does this encrypt your document?

In Numbers you can set password protection on a document. Is it just password protection or is the document also encrypted? If the document isn't encrypted, is an alternative method to encrypt your document available?

That was a good reference on password protection of Numbers files. The answer to your question is there but is only a "note" in one of the sections. Cutting to the chase,

"Note: Adding a password to a spreadsheet encrypts the file."
