Single contact split

How do I split one contact into two contacts? I have my sister in my phone as a contact but my niece uses her iCloud address to talk to me. When I message my sister, it is sent as an iMessage and my niece receives the message on her iPad since my sister has an Android. I’ve tried removing the iCloud address from my sister’s contact card and creating a new contact with just that address. However, the messages are still combined in my messages and automatically select the iCloud address by default when I want to text my sister. How do I remedy this?

Hey Hopstr,

Thanks for posting your question in Apple Support Communities.

This issue is likely happening because your sister has her phone number registered with the Apple ID that your niece is using to send/receive messages. This means that even if you remove the iCloud email address from her contact card the messages will still be grouped together in the same thread because Apple recognizes her phone number as being connected to an iCloud account. The easiest way to resolve this is to have your sister create a child Apple ID account for your niece so that she does not have issues with syncing, messages, FaceTime, etc. in the future.

You can find steps on how to create a child account in this article: Create an Apple ID for your child.

Best Wishes.
