how do I use a backup not on my computer

How do I restore from a backup on an eternal harddrive. I cannot get Itunes to see the backup

can i restore a backup from my pc folder which isnt showing in the itunes hey actually by mistake my backup got overwritten, but in my pcs apple floder appdata/backup folder i can a backup which i think is the old back up, but this isnt showing in my itunes, i want to back up that filem can i do that

Per Apple: If you still can't restore the backup, you might not be able to use that backup. Try to use an alternate backup or an iCloud backup, or Contact Apple Support for more help.
