mail cannot verify account or password since MacOS upgrade. Is there a fix for this?

Try Creating a New App Password:

Use an App Password? If so, your App Password may need to be recreated, then used - something typical after update installations. You would log in using that password, rather than your email password. For example, here is the site for gmail: Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help - Google
