Itunes match -- why all my Itunes music is now missing.

Let me get this straight -- I've been organizing/storing music on my mac for over a decade, but If I want to use it on my mac after upgrading the OS, I've got to subscribe to a service that syncs it with the phone that has a copy. Wow. A total scam.

Good afternoon pk_PK,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you have some questions about syncing music after upgrading the macOS, and we'd like to help.

Which macOS version did you upgrade from on your Mac?

Did you recently upgrade to macOS 11.5?

You do not need to subscribe to a service to sync from your Mac to your iPhone. You can sync via USB as you've always done.

Sync content between your Mac and iPhone or iPad

iTunes Match and Apple Music are optional services to keep your music in sync between all devices wirelessly.

Please provide a little more information regarding what you are trying to accomplish, and we'll do our best to help you.

Take care.

Hi pk_PK,

iTunes has been replaced by the Music app and Finder is now used to sync music from the computer to the iPhone.

So, the key is to make sure your Music library is up to date, and that you have a backup of your Mac and your iPhone before agreeing to sync the library to the iPhone. Sometimes, creating playlists of the music you want on your iPhone and syncing just the playlists makes the process a little simpler.

In addition to the Time Machine backup, we would suggest copying your Music folder to a different external drive.

Use external storage devices with Mac

Whatever you choose to sync from your library will replace whatever is on the iPhone, not the other way around.

You don't have to do this if you are content with what you have on your iPhone. You can purchase and download new music directly from the iTunes Store to the iPhone if you wish. The only time you would need to sync via USB is if you imported CD's into your computer and wanted them on your iPhone.

Here are some resources to help you with this transition:

What happened to iTunes?

Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer

Take care.

Pretty confused with this, as it doesn't seem to be a sincere effort to solve the problem as stated. Perhaps you are trying to solve a problem someone else has, or merely are a bot that is responding inappropriately.

To restate the problem:

  • I've been maintaining my library on my mac for years. There have been several hardware and OS upgrades.
  • The latest upgrade is to Big Sur 11.3.1
  • My files are completely intact
  • The Music App only sees a small subset of my library
  • My phone sees everything.
  • If I sync I lose what is on my phone with the small subset on my computer.
  • There is no method that you are helping me with for my mac to see the local files on the computer.
  • There then is no way for me to maintain my library which I've been paying Apple for decades for service on. Is this working as designed? If not, is there a way to get someone to care about my problem, and not about answers to questions I don't have?

My itunes library has been on my mac since approximately 2002ish, when will still had physical iPods to sync to. The iPod has become touches and then iphones, and the mac has been migrated several times to new hardware and releases of OS.

The data is all physically still present on my Mac, but Music only sees a small subset of it since the demise of itunes, or the migration to the latest mac, I'm not sure. Meanwhile, my iphone has the complete library. This feels like a metadata problem, but I cannot find how to deal with it.

If I look at finder, there is the option to "sync' to the phone -- but that is backwards of the problem! It warns me "do you want to overwrite your phone?" No, while I have a phone backup, I just want music to see what is on my phone and to be able to manage it as I have for nearly 20 years. All the files are intact, and the iphone plays correctly.

Itunes match -- why all my Itunes music is now missing.
