M1 Mac Mini won't respond to keyboard presses or mouse clicks

Within the past week, my M1 Mac Mini (8/8/16GB/1TB, macOS 11.4 and 11.5) will stop responding to mouse clicks and keyboard presses. The mouse cursor remains movable but the computer will not respond to input. Pressing the power button will bring up the menu to restart etc., but no options can be selected. Only a power down will fix the issue, often resulting in a loss of work.

This is happening once or twice a day.

How can I prevent this?

Mac mini, macOS 11.5

After noticing a freeze while the system was displaying a Safari tooltip, I started to look into what applications on my system displayed an overlay on mouseover. One of the candidates was Hyperdock, a utility not updated since 2017 that displays Windows-style window previews when mousing over application icons in the dock: https://apps.apple.com/au/app/hyperdock/id449830122?mt=12

I uninstalled this on 17 September and have not had the input issue since. Not 100% sure that's what did the trick, but it could be.

Is anyone having this issue using Hyperdock or a similar application?

Thank you for this. I have a Mac Mini M1 with Hyperdock installed. Hyperdock was a cary over tool from an older Intel Mac. I also experienced the 'mouse moves, but no clicking or keyboard response' issue.

This was occurring at least once per day, and the only way to clear the issue was a hard reboot.

I've uninstalled Hyperdock, and there has been no issue for 10 consecutive days and counting.

I can live without Hyperdock, I could not live with daily reboots.

Thanks so much!

Guys, I think I found a solution to this problem. Look in the devices, in the sound panel you will have a "teamviewer multioutput" sound device, after removing the freeze is gone! Several times this device reappeared and the freeze started again. You need to delete it like this: Utilities - Midi setup - and remove multiout device. For three days there were no more freezes. When this device was, then there were freezes twice a day. Sorry for my English, my first language Russian

HI Ben,

Sooo weird - I am on exactly the same trail at the moment. After a couple of freezes this week I noticed the little preview window flickering so on my MBP I uninstalled it and haven't had a freeze in 24 hours.

I'm working from home today so on my M1 iMac which froze a lot more - I've uninstalled Hyperdock too on that so I will see how that goes but its an interesting line of enquiry.

As you said its not been updated and the people that I know that dont have freezing issues certainly dont have this app.

Fingers crossed but great to see you think the same thing!
