MacBook Automatic Updates

I use my MacBook for most of the time of day so I don't really have the time to update the device. But with Auto Updates turned on and all the checkboxes ticked I expect my device to be auto updated every night while sleeping, charging and connected to Wi-Fi. But no matter whatever I do I never find it updated. Do I need to tick the box "Prevent the computer from sleeping when display is off" and only turn off the display or is this line "Your Mac will try to update tonight and will automatically restart" enough?? also how many times in a day does my MacBook check for software updates in a day??
