MacBook Pro M1 cracked screen

I have not dropped my computer or have had exercised pressure on it. I left it opened and came back to see a small crack on the side of the screen. The screen is not working anymore.

Apparently other users have experience the same thing.

I bought my computer about 5months a go.

Has Apple acknowledged hog this as a manufacturing issue yet ? Will I get a full refund for this

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.4

Imagine getting it as a gift, and using it a total of 20 minutes in two evenings, to be told when brought to the service center that I "should have bought Apple Care." I am disappointed in the product, disappointed in Apple, and disappointed in the snide employee at the Apple Store.

Unfortunately Apple is not yet recognizing this as a manufacturing defect. There is a class action suit going only about maybe 5K people have experienced it out of maybe 7 million manufactured. Apple will fix it for $300 if you have AppleCare+. If you got something like Allstate Insurance they will simply pay.

I do believe the screen is too thin. The M1Pro screen is about 3/16 of an inch thick.

Had the exact same problem as at least one friend of mine also had, all after 6 to 8 months of acquiring it.

I do not advise to buy the new m1 since apple is not even acknowledging the problem, which means it's not covered by the guarantee (they will say it's because of bad usage) and the repair will cost you up to more than half the price of what you previously paid (+700€). Not frustrating enough, apple support said they haven't heard of this when there's clearly a thread on the oficial website and it's something getting around from several other tech entities.

I had owned Macs in the past. I have owned at least 35 computers mostly Windows based . That is a low estimate. I thought I would try a Mac again because I tire of all the Window's issues. I just want my computer to function when I need it...

Bought an Air. Performance was eh. Same problem as Windows... Then after a little over a year of light - light use. Never leaves the desk - the screen cracked for no reason. $1000 of junk. I use an iPhone and iPad. Have for more than a decade. Rethinking all that. Unacceptable. Better step up to the plate soon Apple.

Same here. The screen / display of my M1 Mackbook pro cracked with no apparent reason. I opened my laptop this morning and to my surprise there were a bunch of colored lines on the side of the screen. I have owned a macbook air since 2013 and never ever had an issue like this. That old Macbook air seems way more solid than these new flimsy macbook pros. To top it off I didn't get Apple care because I am always super careful with my devices and thought I was getting a solid piece of equipment.. I was so wrong!!😥

I have zero confidence that this laptop will last as long as my Macbook air did and have no intentions of buying any other apple product in the near future.

At the genius bar I was told today that it was my fault because "I must have left a crumb or something on top the keyboard". This is a complete joke. Apple needs to step forward and do what's right to us consumers by acknowledging this is a serious design issue that is causing us pay hundreds of dollars for something that must be considered a design flaw.

<< Apple needs to step forward and do what's right to us consumers >>

Apple has taken a serious step forward, in that they now offer AppleCare PLUS which covers such issues for the cost of the labor alone, US$99.

If you made the decision to NOT pay for the extended warranty, you made a decision to bear the cost of screen repairs during the [extended] warranty period yourself.

When facing a problem later, the correct cost calculation is:

Example Total retail cost of repair: US$800

less Example amount you saved US$380

by NOT purchasing a service agreement

Effective incremental cost: US$420

PLUS the amount you saved by not buying the Service contract, which now must be spent as well.

Apple has NOT taken a step forward on this defective, thin, crack-prone glass we're all stuck with on our M1MBA's. Even with AppleCare+, you're out about $275 for policy and another $99 for screen repair, meaning Apple still collects about $375 from loyal consumers for what amounts to a defect in the product.

At the VERY LEAST, Apple should acknowledge there may be an issue and extend the $99 repair to all early adopters of the M1MBA, simply to maintain goodwill.

Its not handling this well at all and I suspect this posting will grow tremendously as more folk add on to it.

This is very shocking to me, I had similar issue that happened to me today morning. I opened the laptop as usual I heard that welcome music but the screen was completely dark and I see the tool bar icons were on but the screen was pitch dark. Later I noticed a crack like on the screen. It was with streak of light and I closed again and opened again no luck the screen was completely dark and those cracks were still there!

i have also noted when I purchased (2020) in first few days I had weird display colors pop up and I didn’t take it a big deal. But now the crack is there for no reason then there must be an error with this model. Apple need to take this into consideration and resolve this matter and find applicable solutions for us, consumers. Either replace new model or refund completely.

The MacBook Pro is a lightweight, portable computer that can run on batteries. Being portable, it can easily be subjected to multi-G forces daily, just by being moved about in a completely ordinary way. This is extremely stressful to electro-mechanical equipment. I would never even think about NOT purchasing the extended warranty coverage for such a portable device.

What is NOT covered is screen glass breakage, liquid spills, or catastrophic failure (hard drops or "run over by a truck").

These items are covered for up to three years (now extendable) by AppleCare PLUS (two incidents of each type with a co-pay that essentially covers the labor). if you want the extended coverage, you must sign up within 60 days of initial receipt and an inspection or remote diagnostic may be required.

How is that possible, I kept MacBook safe as always. How could this happen? It was no way the fault is from my end… if the screen is delicate then Apple should let us know earlier and provide us with warranty or at least equip us with screen protectors or some kind.

I have been having an iPad Air 2 since 2016 and I had no problem with screen or whatsoever. In fact kids use my iPad often and there was no problem with that.

Mine cracked this week after a few weeks. I never dropped it or banged it or took it out of the house. I’ve owned and used Apple laptops for 20 years, and I never saw anything like this. No crumb and no grit. I am not rough with it.

It seems to me that what happened with mine (but I don’t know) is that I held it by gripping it, and that was enough to deflect the back of the lid and deflect/break this thin glass. It was closed and sleeping, and when I picked it up and opened it, it was black with a tiny crack.

I do have Applecare +. Besides this, it is a wonderful machine. I am a photographer, and it has saved me from some workflow issues that were slowing me down. I am going to put a rigid case/cover on it and only handle it by the edges if I can remember to not treat it like a normal laptop.

I had an apple hard case on mine..Went to the kitchen to make a drink..came back and screen was black with a small blaze of colour that looked like a crack on right of screen...It hadn't moved for weeks and was opened up in the morning and closed at night....it was 6 months old and sat permanently on a small desk. ....Apple honoured the repair and it was returned to me. Since then..It is back on the desk, but without the protective top and bottom case, just in case this is the issue....It is a huge problem and I really hope they get to the bottom of it.

Feb 25, 2022 5:18 PM in response to ceri132

****. I had such a strong hunch that flexing of the top lid was the issue, and I was pinning my hope on a case as the fix. I really like(ed) this computer, but now I’m going to be afraid to use it at all. Mine cracked with no cover or anything at all, so NOT having a case/cover also doesn’t help. Wish I had kept my 2019 even if it was hot and slow. (I gave the 2019 to my wife).

Feb 26, 2022 2:15 PM in response to ceri132

Yeah, they must know there is some problem; there are already class action lawyers circling like vultures.

We'll never know, but I sure wish I knew how much of a problem it is by numbers. 1 out of a hundred? 1 out of a thousand? 10,000? If the latter, I would be less nervous using the computer at all when I get it back from Apple.

I didn't pay super close attention to the butterfly keyboard issue except to wait for it to pass. I didn't buy a computer with that generation of keyboard and then jumped at the 2019 with the new design. (A friend had a problem with his butterflykeyboard). I don't know how much Apple did to make it right? It took them a long time to redesign it. Everyone knew it was a problem and those keyboards were not great. Apple sorta maybe kinda admitted it was a problem?

Apple sold more than 20 Million Macs in the last year, and a lot of them were MacBook Pros. if they operate their factory for 50 weeks, that means the ship 400,00 a week, or over 57,000 a DAY.

The number of complaints that make it to these forums is microscopic compared to even one day's production.

But They HAVE done something about it. Now when you buy AppleCare PLUS, you get up to two incidents of screen replacement for only a modest copay of US$100, just the cost of the labor to make the repair.
