MacBook Pro M1 cracked screen

I have not dropped my computer or have had exercised pressure on it. I left it opened and came back to see a small crack on the side of the screen. The screen is not working anymore.

Apparently other users have experience the same thing.

I bought my computer about 5months a go.

Has Apple acknowledged hog this as a manufacturing issue yet ? Will I get a full refund for this

Hi, yes. It’s is very frustrating. It took me several tries with going into the Apple Store (where the lady wrote in her notes that I dropped the computer), then online support and after I brought up the class action lawsuit, the online support connected me to a really nice guy who was a “higher up” manager and he spent time asking me all sorts of questions that he said the engineering team was curious about because this has been happening so often. Then they overnighted my computer and it was back almost the next day. They fixed my screen and did not charge me- but they said if it happened again they would have to

charge me (???) so now I’m so ultra scared even when I open and close it and when I put it in a bag. A laptop should be a lot sturdier than this- especially for what we pay for the apple product.

good

luck to you!

I was wiping the screen of my M1 Air when it was off but felt a bit weird. Turned it on and saw cracks.

A technician here inspected the device and told that there is no physical damage (assume no user's fault) then Apple support referred it to "engineers" to see the photos of screen that I took and said no warranty, multiple cracks means no warranty cover for it (still under warranty). Asked to escalate the issue to higher level that I'm not satisfied with the resolution, the support officer gave me the street address of Singapore office (no email, no phone). She accepted that this doesn't make sense.

I feel scammed by Apple. If Apple told me that this laptop is very good but has weak display, I would take care much or buy an insurance or something. Or not buy at all. I never bought an apple product and this was the first one! No wonder!

In the Apple store, they'll just say "Oh that's nice, but unfortunately apple isn't going to cover it as a hardware defect"

This is definitely a hardware defect. I can't discuss in detail on here, but I suggest people should look into how to get some recourse for this issue.

I've had several laptops over the past two-decades--three-macbooks--and I never broke a screen, especially not after there wasn't any physical interaction with it that would break it to begin with.

With all due respect, thank you for acting like the expert you're not.

The screen clearly cracked from stress. The issue is, why does normal action like closing the lid from the top or simply perhaps grabbing it when its closed among dozens of other possible scenarios, cause it to show hairline cracks at some point that seem to occur "on their own"??

With so many articles now published on M1 laptop screens cracking and thousands of complaints, not to mention a class action lawsuit forming, the M1 MacBook screens clearly have issues. They are likely thinner and less durable than prior generations, a testament I can easily make as an owner of every single generation of MacBook Air, and several pro's spanning 20 years. This the FIRST MacBook ever in my possession to show hairline cracks despite excellent care and no physical damage whatsoever!

I heard my cracks occurring from simply closing the lid one day from the top. I didnt realize what it was at first. I heard a strange cracking sound before the lid was even half way closed but only saw the hairline fractures the next day in bright sunlight.

Clearly the repetition in closing it that way eventually cause enough stress to create very slight fractures (almost not visible).

And to assume the M1 chip has anything to do with it is asinine.

Same here. The screen / display of my M1 Mackbook pro cracked with no apparent reason. I opened my laptop this morning and to my surprise there were a bunch of colored lines on the side of the screen. I have owned a macbook air since 2013 and never ever had an issue like this. That old Macbook air seems way more solid than these new flimsy macbook pros. To top it off I didn't get Apple care because I am always super careful with my devices and thought I was getting a solid piece of equipment.. I was so wrong!!😥

I have zero confidence that this laptop will last as long as my Macbook air did and have no intentions of buying any other apple product in the near future.

At the genius bar I was told today that it was my fault because "I must have left a crumb or something on top the keyboard". This is a complete joke. Apple needs to step forward and do what's right to us consumers by acknowledging this is a serious design issue that is causing us pay hundreds of dollars for something that must be considered a design flaw.

I have an M1 MacBook Air that is within the warranty period (six months) and cracks have appeared in the screen display, rendering the computer useless.

I purchased it 6 months after it’s release. No effort was made to notice me regarding the many cracked screens that have been reported. I have attached pictures of the computer and screen. Please note that there is no external object damage and the cracks originate from the lower right edge of the screen. It is clear to me that the cracks originate from the insufficient support the frame of the computer provides an overly thin and fragile screen design. I closed the computer, and when I opened it again the cracks were there.

I contacted Apple Support and was referred to Apple Certified Repair Company Unitek. As predicted, they immediately blamed me for the problem. However, this is my 5th Macbook purchased and I never had a screen issue. I have never placed any objects large or small between the computer keyboard and the screen.

I have never had an issue with a screen and all the older computers, from 2004, 2009, 2011 have a solid screen whereas the M1 clearly is subject to cracks, bending and other issues caused by a failure to construct a proper frame and screen that is durable.

I bought the M1 because I am unable to upgrade the OS on my 2011 MacBook Pro. The M1 selling point is the new M1 chip manufactured by Apple instead of Intel. I did not realize that Apple changed the construction of the screen. Apple makes the ridiculous claim it is the client’s duty buy additional cases and bags and take extraordinary precautions to protect this fragile device and claims they noticed consumers about this. I was never notified to take additional extraordinary care of this computer. The durability is part of the implied warranty common to all laptop computers.

Mine cracked this week after a few weeks. I never dropped it or banged it or took it out of the house. I’ve owned and used Apple laptops for 20 years, and I never saw anything like this. No crumb and no grit. I am not rough with it.

It seems to me that what happened with mine (but I don’t know) is that I held it by gripping it, and that was enough to deflect the back of the lid and deflect/break this thin glass. It was closed and sleeping, and when I picked it up and opened it, it was black with a tiny crack.

I do have Applecare +. Besides this, it is a wonderful machine. I am a photographer, and it has saved me from some workflow issues that were slowing me down. I am going to put a rigid case/cover on it and only handle it by the edges if I can remember to not treat it like a normal laptop.

Feeling extremely upset now as I finally had to bite the bullet and pay $578 at my local apple store to get my MacBook Pro M1 laptop screen replaced. Same situation described by others in this forum. It started with a tiny with a few vertical/horizontal colored lines that appeared out of nowhere. Took it to the apple store then but could not afford paying that kind of money to replace the screen. Now 5 months later my laptop was unusable so it was either paying or completely losing my initial investment on this expensive machine. While paying I could not stop thinking how I could be buying a brand new windows laptop with kind of money. I was always willing to pay the extra money for Apple’s quality / design but I doubt I will invest on a MacBook laptop again unless apple acknowledges this, fixes this issue on their future products and do the right thing for their customers facing this problem. For that kind of money there should be no doubt that you are buying a durable piece of equipment (like my old 2012 MacBook Air!!) without having to pay a monthly apple care fee for the entire life span of a product .

And the most outrageous thing is being treated like if you were a liar trying to deceive them after mistreating and being careless with your laptop.

I had this too! Just the other day, after using it and closing the lid as anyone normally would, I put it in its soft case. Opened the next day and had a small crack bottom right next to the hinge area which has now created a line up the right side and flashing set of lines across the doc.

There was no dirt/debris in it. I would have heard or felt it as i closed it. This is something else, and clearly with this many people having this issue on the M1, it is, without doubt, a design issue. I've been quote £500 to repair the screen!!!

Same issue with me.. walked back to my opened laptop to find the spider web crack, no physical damage or moving.. I just went to my second Apple store and they also said they can't do anything about it.. charging $800 to replace the screen.. I asked what would happen if it happened again, and they said I would have to pay again...I'm stuck now with a $3000 laptop that doesn't work and I'm worried to even buy a new one from Apple let alone replace the screen... I wish we would get some real help from Apple about this issue...

Same here.

I was using my new MacBook 16" (M1 chip) in an airport lounge. Did a couple hours work, then took a nap. When I re-opened my laptop, there were vertical lines down the right-hand side of the screen. I am being told that i must have closed the lid on some object. No, this was not the case. It was a small table with nothing on it except my computer and a drinking glass. It did not move whilst i was sleeping.

It was suggested that a cable had gotten caught between the laptop lid and the body. No, the only cable was the charging cable, which was plugged into the opposite side.

I have to ask the question - even if eg, a headphone cable was caught between the lip and the body; is the screen so delicate that a thin cable like this can cause so much super-expensive damage? This is a rhetorical question, as I was not using my headphones at the time.

I am now facing a price tag of 977 euros, to get my new, top-of-the-range laptop functional again.

Seems like an awful lot of people around the globe have been experiencing the same issue. In the States there is already a class action lawsuit in progress.

I have been an Apple fan for very many years, choosing to pay top dollar for superior quality and support. My new M1 Macbook will be my 5th Apple laptop; my previous ones have all been very robust. I also buy all-Apple products for my partner; between us, we've had quite the collection of MacBooks, ipads, ipods, iphones, etc. We have been very happy with all of them.

Apple, please do not let your loyal supporters down here. An issue like this being experienced globally cannot all be users being untruthful in their reports of screen problems.

M1 MacBook Pro screens are too fragile!

My M1 MacBook Pro started up to an almost black screen, after a few restarts it shows an ever so small thread-like crack of 1 inch or so emanating from the left screen side. It is smooth to the touch so it's a display-internal crack.

I did nothing but shut my laptop lid somewhat forcefully last night, as I've done with my 2014 MacBook Air hundreds of times.

It is too fragile and no Apple nothing was between lid and keyboard when I shut it.

I guess Apple will charge for this even after I bought three of these.

If so I am done with Apple forever barring incredibly awesome television.

This is exactly where mine started. Then developed vertical lines down the screen, then went blank. It was also sitting safely on a table where i had been working on it the past few hours. No drops, nothing between screen and body, no witness marks of external damage/pressure. I paid 977 euros for my replaced screen, which was apparently due to "user damage". I was told by Apple Service Center in Balakong that it will cost me RM2600. I even bought extra insurance but not the Apple care plus as it was/is not available in the region. Found out today that machines protection plan does this however that choice was not presented to me upon purchase so I am on edge and frustrated. I have raised the complaint and have a senior complaints advisor attend to my call. I hope Apple does something about this issue. I had a Mac air prior to this and it lasted many many years!!!!

I bought my MacBook Air M1 in 2020 just before leaving DC and moving back to South Africa. The costs of fixing an apple product are absurd so as per usual, I am extra careful and only use my laptop in a clean environment and only on my desk. A few days after my exam, I went to get my results to open my MacBook, only to find it cracked on the right corner. It had this faint line on the corner that I at first thought it was a scratch, only to my horror found out that my screen has cracked and the display messed up.

I contact apple to be advised about apple care of which mine apparently is expired.

what is alarming is the number of people who are coming forth with the same issue about faint lines and tiny cracks that destroyed the display. The price to fix is thousands and I have no idea for other places but South Africa it is expensive.

apple please we beg. Help us get long lasting solutions to this problem. The MacBook is a great investment but this glitch is horrible
