MacBook Pro M1 cracked screen

I have not dropped my computer or have had exercised pressure on it. I left it opened and came back to see a small crack on the side of the screen. The screen is not working anymore.

Apparently other users have experience the same thing.

I bought my computer about 5months a go.

Has Apple acknowledged hog this as a manufacturing issue yet ? Will I get a full refund for this

Hi, yes. It’s is very frustrating. It took me several tries with going into the Apple Store (where the lady wrote in her notes that I dropped the computer), then online support and after I brought up the class action lawsuit, the online support connected me to a really nice guy who was a “higher up” manager and he spent time asking me all sorts of questions that he said the engineering team was curious about because this has been happening so often. Then they overnighted my computer and it was back almost the next day. They fixed my screen and did not charge me- but they said if it happened again they would have to

charge me (???) so now I’m so ultra scared even when I open and close it and when I put it in a bag. A laptop should be a lot sturdier than this- especially for what we pay for the apple product.

good

luck to you!

I had owned Macs in the past. I have owned at least 35 computers mostly Windows based . That is a low estimate. I thought I would try a Mac again because I tire of all the Window's issues. I just want my computer to function when I need it...

Bought an Air. Performance was eh. Same problem as Windows... Then after a little over a year of light - light use. Never leaves the desk - the screen cracked for no reason. $1000 of junk. I use an iPhone and iPad. Have for more than a decade. Rethinking all that. Unacceptable. Better step up to the plate soon Apple.

<< Apple needs to step forward and do what's right to us consumers >>

Apple has taken a serious step forward, in that they now offer AppleCare PLUS which covers such issues for the cost of the labor alone, US$99.

If you made the decision to NOT pay for the extended warranty, you made a decision to bear the cost of screen repairs during the [extended] warranty period yourself.

When facing a problem later, the correct cost calculation is:

Example Total retail cost of repair: US$800

less Example amount you saved US$380

by NOT purchasing a service agreement

Effective incremental cost: US$420

PLUS the amount you saved by not buying the Service contract, which now must be spent as well.

This is very shocking to me, I had similar issue that happened to me today morning. I opened the laptop as usual I heard that welcome music but the screen was completely dark and I see the tool bar icons were on but the screen was pitch dark. Later I noticed a crack like on the screen. It was with streak of light and I closed again and opened again no luck the screen was completely dark and those cracks were still there!

i have also noted when I purchased (2020) in first few days I had weird display colors pop up and I didn’t take it a big deal. But now the crack is there for no reason then there must be an error with this model. Apple need to take this into consideration and resolve this matter and find applicable solutions for us, consumers. Either replace new model or refund completely.

How is that possible, I kept MacBook safe as always. How could this happen? It was no way the fault is from my end… if the screen is delicate then Apple should let us know earlier and provide us with warranty or at least equip us with screen protectors or some kind.

I have been having an iPad Air 2 since 2016 and I had no problem with screen or whatsoever. In fact kids use my iPad often and there was no problem with that.

****. I had such a strong hunch that flexing of the top lid was the issue, and I was pinning my hope on a case as the fix. I really like(ed) this computer, but now I’m going to be afraid to use it at all. Mine cracked with no cover or anything at all, so NOT having a case/cover also doesn’t help. Wish I had kept my 2019 even if it was hot and slow. (I gave the 2019 to my wife).

Yeah, they must know there is some problem; there are already class action lawyers circling like vultures.

We'll never know, but I sure wish I knew how much of a problem it is by numbers. 1 out of a hundred? 1 out of a thousand? 10,000? If the latter, I would be less nervous using the computer at all when I get it back from Apple.

I didn't pay super close attention to the butterfly keyboard issue except to wait for it to pass. I didn't buy a computer with that generation of keyboard and then jumped at the 2019 with the new design. (A friend had a problem with his butterflykeyboard). I don't know how much Apple did to make it right? It took them a long time to redesign it. Everyone knew it was a problem and those keyboards were not great. Apple sorta maybe kinda admitted it was a problem?

Yes, good points. But the forum posts are also a microscopic fraction of all users, so who knows. Many of my family and friends use Macs. Out of all of these users, I'm the only one with any likelihood at all of posting on this forum. And I probably would not have done so if I didn't happen to be looking on Macrumors for another topic -- and there I saw a thread about this issue.

I do have Applecare+, and two incidents might be OK. But I had mine crack at 3 weeks of ownership, 5 battery cycles. The computer never left the house, was never dropped or bumped, did not have any crumb or grit between screen and lower body. At this rate I'll use up my two incidents very soon -- hopefully it was just a defect in this particular screen. I'm still rather in pandemic mode and not leaving the house much, and certainly not with my computer. In normal times I carry my laptop a lot more. If it breaks while I'm babying it, what happens when I take it on the road?

Let's hope it's a micro-defect from manufacturing that happens in a small number of screens.

Yeah, I found a good person at Apple too, with this, though he didn't say it was a known problem, or how pervasive it is. It seems I always do find a good support person at Apple, sooner or later. One time, I think it was with the bad logic board fiasco -- I'm remembering it as 2011, and still titanium Powerbooks? Anyway, I had a couple of them fail, and sent it in and got it repaired, and like the fourth time after the repair I opened the box from Fedex and it was DOA. I was really busy with work at that time. The higher level support guy offered me a new, newer model laptop, which I very happily accepted.

For what it's worth, I just talked to my daughter who bought a new M1, hers an Air, on the same day I bought my 16" a few weeks ago. She has a lot of friends with new macs: "Nobody I know has had any problem!"

My current theory, worth almost nothing, is that there are micro-defects in some small percentage of these screens. My former theory, which I haven't discarded altogether, is that the lid is not structurally rigid enough, and it flexes/deflects too easily.

You comments are confusing to me. Are you saying that Apple Computer repaired your cracked M1 screen for free? Was it under warranty? Did you have Apple Care? What did you say to them about the damage? Do you have a picture of the screen that they repaired? Is it a matter of luck in getting a friendly Apple support person whether they repair these defective screens? Thanks.

I do have Applecare+. I always get it on a computer purchase. My approach is to be polite but firm, if it's not your fault and you're not happy with the outcome. And I'm fair with them. If it is my fault, I will admit that. I recently sent in my older 2019 Macbook Pro that still had applecare left on it. I had spilled coffee and it took out the ports on one side. I was happy to pay the $400 in that case, very fair.

Same thing just happened to me.. 2020 M1 13inch MacBook Pro sitting on my desk, went to take a washroom break and came back to a 'spider' crack on the screen... Touch Bar not working.. doesn't even work when I plug in a monitor via HDMI to use as a second screen.. laptop is plugged in and charged.. went to the apple store and they quoted $700 plus labor.. I didn't take it.. I feel cheated and don't know what to do now
