MacBook Pro M1 cracked screen

I have not dropped my computer or have had exercised pressure on it. I left it opened and came back to see a small crack on the side of the screen. The screen is not working anymore.

Apparently other users have experience the same thing.

I bought my computer about 5months a go.

Has Apple acknowledged hog this as a manufacturing issue yet ? Will I get a full refund for this

Imagine getting it as a gift, and using it a total of 20 minutes in two evenings, to be told when brought to the service center that I "should have bought Apple Care." I am disappointed in the product, disappointed in Apple, and disappointed in the snide employee at the Apple Store.

Same here.

I was using my new MacBook 16" (M1 chip) in an airport lounge. Did a couple hours work, then took a nap. When I re-opened my laptop, there were vertical lines down the right-hand side of the screen. I am being told that i must have closed the lid on some object. No, this was not the case. It was a small table with nothing on it except my computer and a drinking glass. It did not move whilst i was sleeping.

It was suggested that a cable had gotten caught between the laptop lid and the body. No, the only cable was the charging cable, which was plugged into the opposite side.

I have to ask the question - even if eg, a headphone cable was caught between the lip and the body; is the screen so delicate that a thin cable like this can cause so much super-expensive damage? This is a rhetorical question, as I was not using my headphones at the time.

I am now facing a price tag of 977 euros, to get my new, top-of-the-range laptop functional again.

Seems like an awful lot of people around the globe have been experiencing the same issue. In the States there is already a class action lawsuit in progress.

I have been an Apple fan for very many years, choosing to pay top dollar for superior quality and support. My new M1 Macbook will be my 5th Apple laptop; my previous ones have all been very robust. I also buy all-Apple products for my partner; between us, we've had quite the collection of MacBooks, ipads, ipods, iphones, etc. We have been very happy with all of them.

Apple, please do not let your loyal supporters down here. An issue like this being experienced globally cannot all be users being untruthful in their reports of screen problems.

Mine was less than 6 months old .. went to make a Cuppa .. came back … Boom! .. After many conversations Apple U.K. repaired free of charge. .. But being accused of damaging it myself by the little upstart in the Apple Shop was not a good start to the proceedings.. However, after doing my homework and investigating the same problem on the other side of the Pond. It soon became very clear to all, that this wasn’t a one off.

M1 MacBook Pro screens are too fragile!

My M1 MacBook Pro started up to an almost black screen, after a few restarts it shows an ever so small thread-like crack of 1 inch or so emanating from the left screen side. It is smooth to the touch so it's a display-internal crack.

I did nothing but shut my laptop lid somewhat forcefully last night, as I've done with my 2014 MacBook Air hundreds of times.

It is too fragile and no Apple nothing was between lid and keyboard when I shut it.

I guess Apple will charge for this even after I bought three of these.

If so I am done with Apple forever barring incredibly awesome television.

Can you provide update?

Bought my macbook pro m1 2020 last December 10 and same issue happened to me last June 5 2022, an internal spider web cracked is found. I did not move my laptop or have done anything from it, only closing it when I’m done. I tried bringing it to the authorized apple store to fix it and they said its not covered by the warranty and I would have to pay Php 37,000 thats almost half of the price of the laptop itself. I would pay for it if Im at fault but I’m not. I have a macbook 2011 and I have never experience any of this. I’m sad and frustrated. I saved up and earned to buy this expensive laptop in exchange for a promised of a durable one yet it fails. And apple is not addressing the issue. Too bad they might lose new and old clients in the near future.

This is exactly where mine started. Then developed vertical lines down the screen, then went blank. It was also sitting safely on a table where i had been working on it the past few hours. No drops, nothing between screen and body, no witness marks of external damage/pressure. I paid 977 euros for my replaced screen, which was apparently due to "user damage". MacBook M1 16", 3 months or so old

There's multiple threads on this topic but same thing happened to mine. Just spoke with a senior advisor and they didn't give me any other options than to pay $900+ cad to replace it. It's sad because I've told so many people how amazing this laptop is but now I'm forced to warn everyone to think twice about getting the new Apple laptops because of this issue and Apple refusing to acknowledge and fix it even though there's a lawsuit and a plethora of people being affected. I'm in touch with a few tech reviewers too to let them know of this growing issue. Hopefully Apple will do something instead of pushing for replacements and releasing new laptops with issues.

This happened to me today. Last night the macpro was sitting on my table just fine. This morning cracked screen from bottom right hand side and I have treated it with as much care and delicacy because it had cost me a bomb last year. I have sent it to the authorised service Center and also called Apple service Center to raise this complaint. They also mentioned that this is not under warranty but I will have to wait for the diagnostic. I will call them again to just reiterate that this is not acceptable. Consumers pay a lot of money to purchase the macpro…Apple should admit there is defect in their product!

I was told by Apple Service Center in Balakong that it will cost me RM2600. I even bought extra insurance but not the Apple care plus as it was/is not available in the region. Found out today that machines protection plan does this however that choice was not presented to me upon purchase so I am on edge and frustrated. I have raised the complaint and have a senior complaints advisor attend to my call. I hope Apple does something about this issue. I had a Mac air prior to this and it lasted many many years!!!!

Yes I got mine fixed coz I had to and no Apple support wasn’t helpful. After 5 days of highlight the issue and speaking with 3 senior advisors the last being someone called Ruben, he said the technical report had indicated several crack was from a single source of impact although I swear it started with just one hairline crack. The senior advisor then asked me and this was after 5 days bear in mind if I had taken any pictures prior to sending it to the repair store because that is the only way he can escalate the issue higher. Of course I didn’t because I started contacting Apple the day I encountered this problem but no one had informed me I had to take a picture of the problem. It was the most infuriating experience of my life. 9 months of a RM6k machine plus a warranty extension that’s useless - even tho I got it fixed because I needed it for exams I no longer think Apple laptops are worth the money invested especially the newer models.

I bought my MacBook Air M1 in 2020 just before leaving DC and moving back to South Africa. The costs of fixing an apple product are absurd so as per usual, I am extra careful and only use my laptop in a clean environment and only on my desk. A few days after my exam, I went to get my results to open my MacBook, only to find it cracked on the right corner. It had this faint line on the corner that I at first thought it was a scratch, only to my horror found out that my screen has cracked and the display messed up.

I contact apple to be advised about apple care of which mine apparently is expired.

what is alarming is the number of people who are coming forth with the same issue about faint lines and tiny cracks that destroyed the display. The price to fix is thousands and I have no idea for other places but South Africa it is expensive.

apple please we beg. Help us get long lasting solutions to this problem. The MacBook is a great investment but this glitch is horrible

What is NOT covered under warranty is screen glass breakage, liquid spills, or catastrophic failure (hard drops or "run over by a truck"). Apple has already responded to this dilemma.

Apple has extended what is covered under AppleCare PLUS plans:

These items are now covered on new plans for up to three years (now extendable) by AppleCare PLUS (two incidents of each type with a co-pay that essentially covers the labor). if you want the extended coverage, you must sign up within 60 days and an inspection or remote diagnostic may be required.

————

If you made the decision to NOT pay for the AppleCare PLUS extended warranty, you made a decision to bear the cost of repairs during the extended warranty period yourself.

30 years of using apple laptops as my standard computers, including last version of Air. Have encountered problems with poor hinges and keypad impressions on screens previously, but nothinh I couldn't live with for the convenience of the machine.

Got a new Air 5 months ago. Yesterday, I closed the laptop and put it in my padded backpack as usual for storage. When re-opened it had lines all across the bottom and side. On inspection, three linear cracks from the lower left of the screen. It wasn't dropped and there was nothing obvious to cause the cracks: there is no obvious impact damage on the screen. Genius tells me that I must have closed it on "something" despite my protestations to the contrary: ain't great being called a liar. Over £400 to get a new display, which I need as my Uni teaching starts next week and everythig is on this machine.

Incredibly disappointed with the quality of this hardware. Probably time to move on to other technology if Apple isn't willing to replace obviously faulty goods and help loyal customers. And time to see whether Trading Standards have any teeth.
