Error code -36 after macOS 11.5.1 update

Hi all.


Updated my M1 MacBook Pro to 11.5.1, then put some file to the Bin. Then changed my mind and pressed Cmd+Z as usual to undo it in Finder. Got this error and the file has just disappeared:

I tried again with more files - same result.

Seems like the file can't be restored to an original location due to some permission error.


I checked the drive with Disk Utility in Recovery mode - everything is fine.


I then tried to fix permissions manually using "sudo diskutil resetUserPermissions / `id -u`", but it's not supported in Big Sur unfortunately.


Reinstalling macOS from Recovery did the trick for a few days and fixed the error, but now it's back.


So anybody else experiencing this or there is a problem with my SSD? 🤔

So far so good - the issue has not returned after I removed an obviously malfunctioning Tunnelblick app from startup 👍


Thanks for the hint with Etrecheck - I didn't even know I had Tunnelblick on a startup list 🤷‍♂️

Hi all,


We're noticing the same issue here in my environment. I have ran the following solutions thus far on an M1, Big Sur 11.5.2:


  1. Creating screenshots that are saved onto the desktop are getting the Error Code -36
  2. Ran dot_cleaner ~/Desktop + reboot. After logging back in, deleting the screenshots/files we had on the desktop worked, however after the third attempt, the error -36 came back
  3. Updated the system from within recovery mode to 11.5.2 rendered the same exact results
  4. rm the file(s) in questions in Terminal (usually located on the desktop) works.


The dot_clean command worked for other users after the reboot but this one system in particular seems to only work for the first two attempts (while trying to delete a file), but eventually gets the error again.


Any clue or ideas on what else to try?

Two things - have you tried the possible solution from the link ?


If yes and still and issue, there might be some third party software interfering with the normal operation of the OS OR in your user account.


To determine Third Party software issue >> Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a Trusted Developer and well Respected ASC Contributor. The application is free or paid from added features. Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ). It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software. The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )


We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.


Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

Always advised —Uninstall any and all third party Antivirus, Cleaners, Optimizers, VPN, speeder uppers....
