why can't i share a cd drive on a mac running 11.5.1

Just got a new iMac running IS 11.5.1. My old iMac is on OS 10.13.6. I can connect remotely, bluetooth, etc but cannot use the CD/DVD drive on the old machine from the new machine. Ponderous!
