Iphone XR is saying that I have 16 GB of media but they don't exist

Hello,

My Iphone XR is saying that I have 16 GB of media, and it says it stems from 306 songs. I don't have one song on my phone, I don't even own that many songs on Itunes! I have deleted so many different apps to see if that would fix it, including Disney Plus, but nothing! This is recent as I had plenty of storage left out of the 64 GB a few weeks ago. I've updated to the last update and have tried everything. I have never had songs or even an app with songs, I have no idea where this is coming from after much research. Besides doing a factory reset, does anyone else have a solution? I've seen many people with the same issue but no solution. I've had that issue with my very old Ipad, but this phone is 2 years old. It's some type of "ghost" memory, I can't delete it. Thanks

Good afternoon mucheinman,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are having an issue with storage on your iPhone XR, and we'd like to help.

When you look at your iPhone storage (Settings > General > iPhone Storage, how many GB of the 64 GB capacity are used? Is this where you are seeing the 16 GB of Media? How many GB are showing in Music? (This is where the songs would show up). The apps using the most storage are listed with the highest data usage at the top - which apps are showing on your list? Do you have any movies (retail or home movies) showing in the Apple TV app? These would fall under the "Media" category.

How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Do you have iCloud enabled for contacts, calendars, notes, photos, etc.? How much iCloud Storage do you have?

What's the difference between device storage and iCloud storage?

It's possible that erasing and restoring from a backup may just bring the corrupt data back onto your iPhone.

Go ahead and back up your iPhone to iCloud or to your computer as you normally do.

Back up iPhone

Then consider this temporary or permanent plan - whichever you choose:

  • Confirm that you have enough iCloud Storage to accommodate your data. (You may need 50 GB or more, it depends what is showing in your iPhone storage)
  • Then turn on iCloud for the features above that you use.
  • Confirm that the data has been uploaded to iCloud.
  • Make sure you have your Apple ID and network name and passwords written down.
  • Restore your iPhone to factory settings, which erases all data.
  • Then set it up as a new iPhone (do not restore from a backup).
  • Enable the same iCloud features as you chose before - all of the data will sync back to your iPhone.
  • Redownload whatever apps you want from your App Store purchases.

This will get you back to square one, and get the on-device storage back.

The iCloud storage has a monthly fee. If you wish to continue paying for the service you can.

Otherwise, you can disable iCloud for each feature and download the data back to your device.

Set up iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Turn iCloud features on or off

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Redownload apps and games from Apple

Take care.
