How can I disable the iCloud for photos and keep my photos on my macbook?

I have inadvertently switched on iCloud for photos. The moment I wanted to disable the function I was told this would delete (?) my photos from the macbook. How do I wipe the iCloud clean and keep the data on my macbook?
