Backup and iCloud

The only two items I am backing up to the iCloud are Contacts and Notes. For a total of like 150 MB. My phone has stopped doing the backup because it says i'm almost out of storage - 4.4GB! When I look at what's taking up the space, it's the backup itself. Why is that happening? If I go to Manage the backup and delete the backup, does that delete my Notes and my Contacts from my iPhone? And as a follow up, if that cleans up my icloud, should I be able to save just Notes and Contacts? What is that huge backup file on the icloud anyway? Is that their way to make customers purchase more storage?

The iCloud backup has never backed up notes or contacts. Those are typically tied into an email account of directly to your iCloud account. So, they are essentially always in sync. A full backup, one you make to a computer, effectively backs up your entire device and everything on it. If you're concerned about potential loss, multiple backups is always a good idea. I lost a term paper in college once .... never lost anything again. So I backup a lot....

Regardless. Connect your phone to your computer to make a full backup (just in case).

Then, toggle off iCloud backup; since it's not backing up contacts and notes anyway.

As long as you have the services you wish to sync toggled on, you'll be fine.
