Apple TV audio/video sync issues

Lately I’ve been having difficulty with lagging audio to video syncing with my Apple TV 4K. If I restart it, the problem is temporarily fixed, but after about 5 minutes of watching Netflix or hbo now, the audio will start lagging. This doesn’t typically occur with Disney plus or streaming movies from iTunes. Once the audio starts to lag with the service, it continues to lag once I exit the app. The sounds you hear when hovering over different apps lags significantly. Again, this is only fixed by resetting the Apple TV. I have run Netflix through my (smart) TV and had no problems with audio (it’s the same TV I have the Apple TV connected to). I’ve also ensured my internet connection/speed is good (>300Mbs), and have tried connecting my Apple TV to my router via Ethernet cable, with no improvement. This problem has been present for months but has gotten significantly worse recently. Changing between audio formats doesn’t do anything (a suggestion I saw when researching the topic). Please help.

I just updated my Apple TV 4K and this same thing started happening to me today. Watched two Netfix movies last night with no issues, but tonight the sound streams to my airplay Bose speakers ahead of the video. Also, my picture is slightly glitchy. When I change to TV speaker (which runs through HDMI cable) sound is perfectly synced with video and no more glitch. Again, this was NOT an issue until my Apple TV updated. This doesn't look like a fluke. It looks like a BAD UPGRADE. PLEASE FIX ASAP!

I have the same issue along with many others. I have no answers but have made a crucial observation. If I wire Apple TV to my Onkyo receiver and feed Sony x900 tv through eArc I get the delay. If I wire Apple TV to tv and send audio to receiver through eArc there is no delay. I don’t think the problem is Apple TV, I think it is the firmware/software differences driving the eArc communications between tv and receiver. This is not a perfect solution since I lose some audio quality like 7.2 but still sounds good. I did not have this problem with my older Panasonic plasma tv using Arc communications further convincing me that is the problem.

Same here, bought some high speed 8k hdmi cables as suggested elsewhere and no joy, Netflix, Apple TV and prime all work without issue but YouTube, iPlayer, My5 all4 etc are just stuttering and going out of sync. A reboot fixes the issue for 5 minutes then back to out of sync. This issue only happened post latest update (it was there prior but it took days to go out of sync in the past.

I thought initially it was my setup, Phillips ambilight tv with Sonos playbasr for sound but since the Apple TV update it’s not unusable. Went to the apple store and they said “well don’t use the apps causing the issue!” I had to laugh…. Seriously though sort your sh*t out apple as this is a total joke, just rollback the update or push out a fix!!!

Ya know I subscribe to another thread on these forums about the sound completely not working when dolby atmos is enabled (by default it is) with Samsung Tvs. I have to wonder if the Apple TV isn't a product that is maintained within the Apple ecosystem. There are plenty of complaints about this and the other issue with no resolution or even comment from Apple but for standard "reboot and see if it fixes the problem" responses. Shameful.

I am having this issue on the two apple tv 4ks that I own.

It happens when watching on the first TV that uses Homepods as the speakers. The 2nd TV is using a Sonos Arc soundbar. Thirdly, it happens on both TVs when using my Airpods as the sound source.

I can get rid of the lag by rewinding the content but the lag is introduced about 10 - 15 mins later

This is an update to a previous post. I have had most of the lagging issues that I have been reading about. I have three Apple TV's; one new and two previous generation. Both generations lagged on my Sony x900 TV, all worked fine on my older Panasonic Viera plasma TV (remind me again why we ever dropped this superior technology). I was using the TV inputs and sending sound to my Onkyo nr656 receiver when I switched to using the inputs on the receiver it was the same thing. I reset everything to default factory; TV, receiver and Apple TV. This forced me to review each setting and do a little research on some. I do not know what I may have changed from previous since I wrote nothing down but there is back ground communication between HDMI ports between receiver, TV and Apple TV. After some frustrating moments I came to the correct settings by first programing the receiver then the Sony TV then the Apple TV. I streamed Apple TV from eArc on receiver to eArc port 3 on Sony TV then I had to go back and reset a few video settings on Apple TV that were greyed out originally until they started talking to the TV. I wish I knew what the actual problems were but it was all trial and error. In addition my Sony 4k blue ray player has HDMI audio out to the receiver and HDMI video out to the TV. There was never a problem with the blue ray player.

Cheers

I have only ever used my Apple tv this way. HDMI from Apple TV directly to my TV and this has been an ongoing issue for months. Usually turning it off and back on will fix the issue for the show I’m currently watching but soon as it’s over and I go to another app or show my sound is gone completely. I have done a factory reset, restarted, new hdmi cable and nothing seems to fix it! Soooo frustrating to say the least.

My Apple TV is connected to my vizio TV with the HDMI. This has been an ongoing issue for months over here. I have tried everything including factory reset, restarting it, and turning it off constantly. It will start working after I have turned it off a couple times. But soon as I exit out of ANY app I no longer have sound. I do not even hear the clicking of the remote anymore even though it is on.

Hello all,

Some new observatios with this common problem:

I just added another Apple TV 4K. There was no audio lag issue, whatsoever, with any app or system.

For some reason I still chose to calibrate audio in the settings, and immediately after calibration, the issue started! Ran the calibration again and again, to no victory.

The audio now lags in all streaming, INCLUDING Apple TV+.

Apple really should investigate thei audio calibration tool, seems to cause this issue...at least for me.

Hey All,

Chiming in here. I have this same issue with an LG TV. I just purchased a brand new Apple TV 4k using UHS HDMI 2.1 cable I bought a year ago . I’m unclear if it is 48gbps but it’s labeled as ultra high speed. The problem seems to only happen with the history channel or A&E apps or anything on their network. I have tried all of the solutions listed here. Changing configurations on either the ATV or the LGTV have done nothing so far. My Apple TV is wired straight to my router. I am updated completely but do not have the Beta software installed. It doesn't seem to make a difference if I use airplay or play the audio from my sound bar which is wired via optical cable.

I see a lot of LG TVs in this thread. Could that be the culprit? Has anyone solved this?
