Apple TV audio/video sync issues

Lately I’ve been having difficulty with lagging audio to video syncing with my Apple TV 4K. If I restart it, the problem is temporarily fixed, but after about 5 minutes of watching Netflix or hbo now, the audio will start lagging. This doesn’t typically occur with Disney plus or streaming movies from iTunes. Once the audio starts to lag with the service, it continues to lag once I exit the app. The sounds you hear when hovering over different apps lags significantly. Again, this is only fixed by resetting the Apple TV. I have run Netflix through my (smart) TV and had no problems with audio (it’s the same TV I have the Apple TV connected to). I’ve also ensured my internet connection/speed is good (>300Mbs), and have tried connecting my Apple TV to my router via Ethernet cable, with no improvement. This problem has been present for months but has gotten significantly worse recently. Changing between audio formats doesn’t do anything (a suggestion I saw when researching the topic). Please help.

I just updated my Apple TV 4K and this same thing started happening to me today. Watched two Netfix movies last night with no issues, but tonight the sound streams to my airplay Bose speakers ahead of the video. Also, my picture is slightly glitchy. When I change to TV speaker (which runs through HDMI cable) sound is perfectly synced with video and no more glitch. Again, this was NOT an issue until my Apple TV updated. This doesn't look like a fluke. It looks like a BAD UPGRADE. PLEASE FIX ASAP!

Focusing on the type of ethernet cable is pointless. A cat5 cable will reliably carry 100 Mbps reliably. cat6 will carry 1Gbps and Cat7 is not IEEE recognized yet. How many people have more than 100Mbps internet today?

Internet bandwidth does not have to match the HDMI cable as video processing converts what comes in over the wire (Internet) into the best AppleTV can produce for the destination TV. HDMI 2.1 cable supports 18Gbps which, I think, can support up to 8K. How many of you are watching 8K when such content is not yet available?

The problem is very likely related to the Apple software (or underlying hardware) related to audio processing. Changes to the default configuration may be causing the loss of sync.

I’ve had an intermittent audio video synch issue with my Apple TV 4K and my LG OLED TV. The issue seems to happen across many different apps and only on the 4K version of the Apple TV. Apple checked into it and said to check with LG. I called LG and was told it is a known issue. The solution they recommended was to turn off the Dolby Atmos and smart sound settings on the LG OLED T V.

Apple worked with me for 3 days and determined the Apple TV was not the problem. At first I thought they were passing the buck but I pressed LG and got thru to a tech support person who said it was a known issue with the TV. He recommended I turn off the Atmos and smart sound settings on the TV and since then I have not had any problems with audio and video syncing.

Your lucky it’s resolved for you, unfortunately the issue is not caused by using an LG tv as it affects many different brands of TV’s and setups and it’s not down to your network connection or type of lan cable or hdmi cable. The issue occurred after an OS update and has yet to be resolved I’m afraid. Apple have a long history of ignoring issues with there applications and hardware and sadly customer feedback does little to resolve issues they are aware of.

I’ve tested the issue by rolling back the OS on my 4K ATV after exhausting all the suggestions and advice on various forums and from apple support and the only thing that fixed it was rolling back the OS a long way which is challenging to say the least and not easy for most and it also renders many updated apps unusable so isn’t really a practical solution.

sadly I find it unlikely apple will put any significant effort into fixing this as there is no profit in it for them and it’s not really high on their priorities list.

They kinda have to, otherwise they’ll lose on future sales if their hardware/software is unable to payback movies properly. It’d utterly decimals any sales of movies/tv shows/ Apple TV boxes if you can’t use them. It completely makes sense they’ll fix or they are not a $3 trillion dollar company but a $2,000 one. If they want to make money off iTunes Store for movies /tv shows or on apple boxes, it will be fixed. Kinda obvious. Just a matter of when.

I didn't know about this until it was too late to return the device. I don't think apple has it on its radar. At some point Apple could acknowledge the problem. I have two problems with audio on my apple tv. It doesn't work with my samsung tv and this is a widely known problem and then when sound does work its out of sync. Just a shame. I revert to my roku a lot when I can't stand the sound being so far off the video.

I think it’s with certain hardware combinations and they are aware but it’s not worth their time to fix. It won’t effect them as much as someone mentioned earlier. Most people aren't having issues at all. They have no incentive to help us here.

I have tried multiple factory resets and I’m using HomePods so my sound bar isn’t even in the mix here. Someone mentioned it isn’t exclusive to LG….I don’t think it is. I think it’s exclusive to certain hardware specs that all the effecting tvs seems to have in common. Some Samsungs and even some Sonys. But let’s be honest here, the majority of people in here have an LG tv with Dolby

I’m an Apple lover across the board and have been an avid techie my entire life, unfortunately there is something weird going on with my Apple TV 4K Netflix and HBO, exactly as you have stated. I have tried everything and beyond but cannot resolve the voice sync issue…with my vast experience, it is my opinion that only Apple can possibly solve this by being dedicated to this in a formal manner.

there are some temporary fixes here and there but within minutes or so the voice starts lagging again.

Apple, we all love you and embrace our lives with your superior products, please can you dedicate an in-house team to solve this problem as it’s not enjoyable at all to watch Netflix or HBO.

Peace🙏

I don't believe this is an LG TV issue. The same thing happens with all brand TVs, it's just that so many have LGs these days.

This is clearly an Apple TV 4K issue, for me it happens with LG TV, but also with my second ATV 4K connected to an Optoma 4K projector! This is in no way related to the display device!

As said earlier, the problem is not there out of the box, but for me it started happening once I ran the Apple TV optimizations offered in the menus. The thing that is supposed to make it "even better", breaks everything up!

The next paragraph was from a post a few months ago that I thought maybe I should repeat with an update. I was certainly disappointed when the voice issue popped up when I replaced my Apple TV with Apple TV 4K. I fixed the problem which you can read below. I forgot to mention that everything is on a LAN with 100 mb service which regularly tests at 105-115 mb. I have an Apple Airport router connected to one 16 port switch with home runs to every piece of equipment. I bought the most expensive switch I could find, not because I know what I am doing but because I only know enough to be dangerous. I mention this because many (including myself) don’t mention how they are feeding their equipment which might make a difference. Do you have DSL or cable? WiFi or LAN? Consistent service from provider? Which HDMI ports? (Not all ports on TV’s are created equal) Finally I recommend going back to factory default and write down every change.

This is an update to a previous post. I have had most of the lagging issues that I have been reading about. I have three Apple TV's; one new and two previous generation. Both generations lagged on my Sony x900 TV, all worked fine on my older Panasonic Viera plasma TV (remind me again why we ever dropped this superior technology). I was using the TV inputs and sending sound to my Onkyo nr656 receiver when I switched to using the inputs on the receiver it was the same thing. I reset everything to default factory; TV, receiver and Apple TV. This forced me to review each setting and do a little research on some. I do not know what I may have changed from previous since I wrote nothing down but there is back ground communication between HDMI ports and between receiver, TV and Apple TV. After some frustrating moments I came to the correct settings by first programing the receiver then the Sony TV then the Apple TV. I streamed Apple TV from eArc on receiver to eArc port 3 on Sony TV then I had to go back and reset a few video settings on Apple TV that were greyed out originally until they started talking to the TV. I wish I knew what the actual problems were but it was all trial and error. In addition my Sony 4k blue ray player has HDMI audio out to the receiver and HDMI video out to the TV. There was never a problem with the blue ray player.

Cheers
