iPhone 12 Pro Max - post processing over sharpens photos (deep fusion?)

I went from an XS Max to an iPhone 12 Pro Max a few days ago. I immediately noticed that the photos (particularly macro, telephoto lens) were being over corrected by iOS auto processing the image. The contrast/sharpness/exposure are all very unnatural looking.

I’ve tried all Camera settings, disabling HDR viewing in the Photos app itself, nothing seems to help. I read it may be deep fusion algo itself doing this. My photos look so unnatural.

Is this happening to others still? Am I missing something here? I am experiencing this with the native camera app.

I tried everything, so I’m just using Camera+ 2 now.

my iOS is up to date, thanks. I returned the 12 Pro Max. Very disappointed - deep fusion makes photos look over processed, and the minimum focus distance is much greater for the 12 pro max, making it harder to take macro photos (have to be farther away). Same MP camera as previous generations, so the photographs of my coins look comparatively low res (due to focal length issue) and way overprocessed (due to deep fusion algo).

hoping some issues will be addressed w 13 and/or iOS 15 option to keep pre-processed photos

Hello nbar,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. Congratulations on your new iPhone! We understand you're having issues with the camera quality on your iPhone 12 Pro Max. Which exact version of iOS 14 are you updated to under Settings > General > About?

If you have an update for iOS 14.7.1 available, we recommend that you create a recent backup for the data in your iPhone in iCloud or your computer? If not, we recommend that you create one as described here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Then update your iOS as outlined here: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Please let us know if that doesn't improve your camera's performance, and we'll move forward from there.

Cheers!
