Add Freeze Frame not working

Hello!

I'm using FCP 10.5.4 on a 2021 M1 iMac and I'm trying to insert a freeze frame using ⌥+F and/or EDIT | ADD FREEZE FRAME. Neither technique works. The clips is split into two, but the freeze frame is not added. I checked the Command Editor to see if the keys had been remapped, but they have not — it still indicates ⌥+F Insert/Connect Freeze Frame. I've used this technique many times in the past on a late-2012 iMac, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work now on a 2021 iMac.

My only workaround at the moment is to SHARE | SAVE CURRENT FRAME, then reinsert it.

Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on? Any suggestions I might try to resolve this?

Thanks!

Chris

Good new, I have a work around.

I am having the same problem in FCP. In fact, the problem is inconsistent. On one clip, Freeze Frame works for part of the clip and not for other parts of the clip. I've tried all sorts of work arounds and finally found a work around. I will do a video on my YouTube channel in the next few days. - "GriniFlix"

In short, here are the steps to the work around:

1: Select the clip in the timeline that is NOT working with Freeze Frame.

2: Create a compound clip of this clip. (option)⌥+G or RIGHT CLICK on the clip. (You are creating a compound clip, even though only one clip selected)

3: Type the name of the new compound clip (you can even use the same name as the original clip).

4: Press OK. Now you can action Freeze Frame ⌥+F anywhere along that particular clip.

You need to repeat this process for any clips that are having the same problem in your time line with FREEZE FRAME.

Let me know if this works for you.

Hi, Friends!

So, this just keeps getting weirderer and weirderer:

Out of frustration, I just went ape crap crazy on one of the clips and discovered something interesting; check out the screenshots below:

Notice the first screenshot of Clip GH010313 is a single, continuous clip.

The second screenshot shows where I randomly tried to insert a freeze frame via the ⌥+F shortcut. The first two-thirds of the clip resulted in blades, while the final third actually inserted freeze frames! I tried this on a couple other clips and had the same result!

Why would it behave like this? Have a discovered a bug in FCP?

Hi, terryb!

Before I download any of those apps, please take a look at the attached info. Is this the info you were looking for? The app I used to display this info is Scoop! from the App Store. After selecting the file, the app showed a ton of info, so I searched for all instances of "frame", which included the audio frame rate (which I had never seen before, either).

Do all the menus have grayed out shortcuts?

Upon closer inspection, it appears ALL menus for ALL macOS apps have grayed out shortcuts! WTH?!

Do you have Chrome installed?

Chrome! Yuck! Ick! Heck no! I don't trust it and wouldn't go near it!

Post an EtreCheck report  https://etrecheck.com  giving the application full disk access from  System  Preferences. When it finishes the scan, click Share Report and choose "Copy Report"; then paste in the additional text box in your reply.

See attached.

Thanks!

Hi, Tom!

Happy Sunday! And thanks for the quick reply!

Here is the screenshot you requested. I also included the menu to show that Add Freeze Frame is grayed out. I just started this project last night and am in the process of going through all the clips to find what I can keep and what I can delete, so no effects have been added.

@Tom Wolksy and @Luis Sequeira1 (and anyone else interested):

Just got off the phone with Apple Support. After verifying macOS and FCP versions, settings, updates, etc. were all in order, and multiple unsuccessful attempts to insert a freeze frame at the playhead's location, in the end, we just blamed it on ancient Egyptian mysticism (my video is about a recent trip to an Egyptian museum in San Jose, CA).

We opened older projects, and even created a new project, in which we tested ⌥+F without any problems. We then went back to the current Egyptian museum project and noticed that we were able to add a freeze frame to some clips and not others (all clips were filmed with a GoPro Hero8) using the menu option as well as the shortcut option.

So, why are we blaming this issue on Egyptian mysticism? Well, here is where it gets crazy freaky: I was able to add a freeze frame to all the clips before the clip of a mummy, but not to any clips after the mummy! I'm actually debating whether I should continue with this project or abort it. LOL!

See if you can open one of the files in the QuickTime player and check what the info inspector says about the frame rate. Or if you can check in an application like MediaInfo.

I opened one clip that allows me to, and one clip that doesn't allow me to, add a freeze frame. Both are H.264. All clips were recorded with a GoPro Hero8. Aside from the size, there were no other differences between the two files.

Are the clips that aren't working with Freeze Frame a different codec than the others (like HEVC)? Have you tried Optimizing the media? (Which basically converts the clip to ProRes422).

Hi, fox_m!

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately, optimizing the media didn't work either. All the clips were filmed with a GoPro Hero8 and are H.264.

I'm having the exact same issue. The Freeze Frame button has been grayed out for weeks and I've been unable to find a fix. However, I was able to create a FreezeFrame by changing/matching my projects frame rate to my footage frame rate.

Fortunately, I'm working on interview footage provided by my client and he filmed everything in 24 fps (my original and default project frame rate is 23.98). Once I changed the project frame rate to 24 fps, to match the footage, the freeze frame worked (even though it was still grayed out).

Interestingly enough, as I'm typing this I actually brought in a 120 fps and a 59.94 fps clip from another project and added them to this new 24 fps timeline. And wouldn't you know it, the freeze frame worked on those clips as well. So I went back to my original problematic 23.98 timeline and magically the freeze frame function is now working. UGHHH!!! So frustrating, but maybe my findings will help jar someone else's Mac into acting right!
