Thanks Rob, perhaps misread the Sierra for High Sierra, probably didn't need the --applicationpath.

Anyway, I found an easier way to make a bootable drive.

Using Disk Utility, simply restore the Mac OS X Install ESD to an erased Mac OS Journaled Extended formatted USB.

Is there anyway I can do a complete fresh install of Mountain Lion to a 2010 iMac with a fully erased hard drive?

This iMac had been updated to High Sierra before I purchased it and i want to take it back to an OS closer to its release software.

Hey there peter_g_d,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're needing assistance creating a bootable installer. We're happy to provide some assistance.

At the bottom of the "Use the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal" section of How to create a bootable installer for macOS it states "If your Mac is using macOS Sierra or earlier, include the --applicationpath argument and installer path, similar to the way this is done in the command for El Capitan."

Let's make sure you are following those steps correctly. If the issue persists, try creating a bootable installer on another Mac.

We hope this helps.

Have a great day!

macOS versions earlier than High Sierra do not have createinstallmedia. You can check by opening ESD.

Your method is much easier. You can boot from the USB you created, and erase the internal disk and re-install macOS. You may run into an issue with certificates which may not have been renewed by Apple on older macOS (or OS X) versions.
