iTunes is CONSTANTLY telling me to sign in to the iTunes Store!

I have NOT been making queries to the iTunes Store and I can't get anything done in iTunes because it keeps requiring me to sign in to the iTunes Store before I can continue. I haven't tried doing it yet because it I want to first find out WHY it is doing that! It should NOT require it to use iTunes on my computer. I cannot even close iTunes or access the iTunes splash screen because it was 'inhibited' until I could get rid of the troublesome dialog box. Canceling the box immediately yields another, and it repeats endlessly.

I am on a MBP 17" (Mid 2010) running MacOS X 10.13.6, iTunes 12.8.2.

Try holding down option+cmd as you launch iTunes to open it in its safe mode and see if that makes a difference. If you still get the repeated sign in prompt try taking your computer offline. If that doesn't help reinstall iTunes.

I got my first virus from Microsoft in a spreadsheet I was supposed to use to invoice them!

I don't have concrete details but I believe there is malware that attempts to lift Apple ID passwords by intercepting the connection to the iTunes Store. Eliminating malware has helped others who were having issues working with the store. I've recommended MalwareBytes on a number of occasions and use it myself in the free mode where it runs on demand rather than as a service. It is only a thought as I'm struggling to think why iTunes is insisting on connecting. I am typically signed into the store, but I've also used iTunes signed out for long periods without needing to sign in.

The other night when I made my last ditch effort inquiry to Apple Forums about this problem with iTunes. I could not QUIT iTunes with that problem on-going. After a while of working another App, I came back and selected iTunes again and the box came up. I clicked o" 99 times before it went away for 10 minutes, then came back. I think it stores up the 'notices'.

Tonight I turned it on and got the box about 4 times over a 15 minute period. I then quit iTunes and restarted it in SAFE mode. The first thing that came up was a dialog box! I only got it a few times in 10 minutes, it wasn't continuous. When I am off line I never get the dialog box but I'm sure there is a query made from iTunes to check to see if it is connected to the internet. If not, they don't bring up the dialog box. I can eliminate the box by not connecting to the internet but I need that for all my other Apps to!

I want to know why iTunes is making me sign in to the iTunes Store in order to use iTunes!

That's correct, I don't, but I have tried to download artwork for my songs and audiobooks. When I do it on purpose it has never had me sign-in! Is that a standing 'call' procedure? If so why wouldn't it be detecting me and recognizing the number of devices I have registered with Apple and do that on all my devices? This only has happened on this particular MBP. I did try Genius a few years ago to see what it did, but it gives me music I don't care for. I haven't tried it since.

The last time I downloaded an anti virus program, it gave me a virus! It took over 2 years for me to figure out how to get rid of NetFunctionSearch! Two additional antivirus programs later (they did nothing to remove it) I decided to go through every file in my Library and my System Library and got rid of about a dozen files that indicated a relation to NFS. That was only a few weeks ago and I haven't had any problems since. Is there something else in the way of malware that would try to access the iTunes Store for something?

And thank you for your help.

I'm sorry I smiled at your victimization also, but if it can happen to you, I do feel less sought out!

I have been very wary of the possibility of password capturing, but I can't do a thing about it if it is related to an actual purchase.

I did check to see if I had Genius on and I did! It had stayed on for a couple of years. It seemed like the logical choice for the source. I didn't even know where to find it, but I turned it off and the boxes continued, but only occasionally.

One thing has changed in the box that appears now. Instead of directing me to sign in to the iTunes Store, it now notifies me that my iTunes session has timed out and I need to sign in to continue the session. But I don't want to enter into a session with the iTunes Store! If I did, I certainly know what to do. It hasn't stopped making unrequested demands on me to connect with Apple for whatever reason, but at least it isn't continuous and unrelenting anymore which prevented me from using iTunes.

Thank you for your persistence.

They may have in the past but they aren't now for me.

Although my problem isn't solved, it has been reduced from unmanageable to merely irritating. Thanks for working with me on this. If you really think Malwarebytes is worth its subscription price, I'll try it for a year, but deep down I think this is a problem with iTunes. My MBP won't upgrade past High Sierra to switch to Music, but I don't particularly want to as I don't like the changes to the way I organize my audio.
