High Sierra install hanging on firmware update

I am attempting to do a fresh install of High Sierra on a 5,1 Mac Pro.

We cannot get past the "a firmware update is required." I know it is supposed to take a "few minutes", but there is no progress after 60 minutes.

Perhaps there a step by step guide on what to do from this point?

All help is appreciated.

Closing the loop on this one.

We started at square one, walking through all steps.

Resetting the PRAM (again) did the trick. Not sure why a 2nd PRAM reset worked -- perhaps because all of the PCI devices were removed the 2nd time around.

Anyway -- thanks for your help.

Got it -- thank you. So what I read was to pull the non-apple stuff out of the box.

The GPU is Apple-spec ATI 5770 -- that can and must stay -- no backup.

The add ons are the OWC PCI card with OWC SSD, and a USB 3 card, also purchased from OWC. I should temporarily pull both cards.

Memory is 4x8 gb, also OWC. --- Which if any of these should I remove?

Anything else?

Thanks again!

We've pulled the PCI cards and have only one HDD in the system. It continues to get stuck on the "firmware update is required" screen. Frustrating.

Good thing I am stubborn about such things.

I feel like we've missed a step. Are there additional actions that may get us past the "firmware update" screen?

Thanks again for the assistance so far.
