Image filename format rules

What are the rules for filenaming images that will guarantee acceptance by iMac, MacBook Pro and iPad?

I have noticed that iPad in particular will not accept some formats.

Eg: I need to rename my images taken on a lumix which have the format "Pfffnnnn.jpg" where P stands for photo (presumably), fff the folder number on the Lumix and nnnn the frame number. The revised format must be "SSX-Placename-MI-1_" plus "Pfffnnnn.jpg". The iMac and the MacBook Pro accept this, but the iPad ignores it. The images will finally be loaded onto an online database and must have the revised format.

How can I get round this? I suspect there are other formats which also not allowed.

iPad Air, iOS 12

The work flow I'm working with is as follows...

  1. Photos taken on a digital camera producing image files in the format "Pfffnnnn.jpg" (as in my first post).
  2. These are loaded onto the MacBook Pro using the built in SD card reader.
  3. Filename is edited using Finder by adding "SSX-Placename-MI-1_" to the filename as a prefix. eg: "SSX-Placename-MI-1_P1230001"
  4. At this point it would be ready to upload, but I can also transfer the file to the iMac by linking the two devices and drag & drop. This works and the iMac will accept the filename format.
  5. To transfer the file to the iPad I copy it back onto the SD card and use the SD card reader plugged into the iPad. This is where the transfer fails. The iPad Photos app doesn't "see" the image. All other images on the SD card are however available for import.

The purpose of this convoluted method is that I then have a portable copy to take to site and refer to.

One approach I will try today is to email the image to myself and open it on the iPad. The problem with this approach is the number of images is likely to exceed 450. Too many emails!

I don't use iCloud for image storage or transfer.

I think I have solved this issue myself.

All the above happened as previously posted, what solved the problem appears to be the march of time!

I went back over what I had tried previously and found the sample image I was using happily sitting in the iPad Photos library! You can open the file and view it, edit it, etc - no problem. I don't know why, but it seems to have taken 24 hours for the iPad to accept the renamed file. As I am not using iCloud it can't be a poor connection to Apple.

So, Problem solved thanks for the interest...
