Logic Pro X on M1 Mac Mini loads very slowly or double loads while on Rosetta 2.

Hello,

I have a strange problem with Logic Pro.

I have the 2020 M1 Mac Mini with:

  • 16GB RAM
  • macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 (the problem occurred on previous Big Sur versions too though).

Whenever I open Logic Pro (Version 10.6.3) while using Rosetta 2 the following are happening:

1.When simply opening logic and waiting for the start-up window where you can choose the template, tempo, etc, the Logic Pro banner opens normally as seen below:

However, after that, it takes Logic about 2 to 5 minutes to load up the start-up window (the one seen below):

2.When I open the DAW by clicking on the Project file (.logicx), the DAW opens normally, however, once opened everything seems fine untill I get into any kind of interaction with the computer, even a simple mouse move. Then, Logic "freezes" and the rainbow circle on my coursor appears for about 2 times the time it took to load the project. Logic itself doesn't become brighter which would indicate that it actually froze, and it seems like it's reloading the whole project and all plugins again. After that, it seems to function normally. (ALSO - It will do the "reload" or strange freeze process - for about 2 minutes - even on a project with just audio files and no plugins loaded, or even on a small project like 5 tracks and no plugins, either virtual instruments or effects).

None of the above happens when I open Logic Pro natively on M1, however, I cannot always do that since I am using a fair bit of 3rd Party Audio plugins that are not compatible with M1 yet. And yes, I have seen and tested myself, that even with Logic running on M1 natively, I can open significant most of the 3rd party audio plugins and they will actually work, however, Logic will eventually crash when I load more than 10-15 not M1 Supported plugins.

There are absolutely random ocasions where I would open the project and it wouldn't reload or freeze, and I could get to work quickly. But that happens probablly about 6 times since the problem occurred (which was a few months ago).

I have tried to re-install Logic, reset the Logic Preferences, update Logic, update all possible plugins that I could have, Re-installed all plugins and nothing is helping.

Also, as you can see on the 2nd picture, I am using Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII interface, but the problem happens with any external audio interface or even with the built-in output.

I didn't seem to find ANY information about this issue (regarding Rosetta 2) in the internet so far. I have found similar issues, where the same problem would happend as described in my 1st example of the issue mentioned above, but that was on intel based Macs and the reset of Logic preferences would help. It doesn't help here.

Even though logic seems to be working fairly alright after the project is finally loaded (under Rosetta 2), it is extremely frustrating that I have to wait for so long to just either open the project or DAW itself... And I do feel like my Logic Runs slower than it should when I compare it to other people with the same spec M1 Mac Mini, using Logic under Rosetta 2 using mostly the same plugins as I use.

List of plugins I use:

  • Acon Digital
  • Analog Obsession
  • Antares
  • Arturia (Virtual Instruments)
  • Audio Damage
  • Audio Ease
  • Celemony
  • D16 Group
  • DDMF
  • Eiosis
  • FabFilter
  • Focusrite
  • Goodhertz
  • iZotope
  • Kilohearts
  • Klanghelm
  • Mercuriall
  • Native Instruments (Virtual Instruments & Effects)
  • oeksound
  • Overloud
  • Plugin Alliance
  • Slate Digital (effects only)
  • Softube
  • SoundToys
  • Spectatronics (Virtual Instruments)
  • Steven Slate Trigger 2
  • TAL Audio
  • Tokyo Dawn Labs
  • Toontrack (Superior Drummer 3)
  • Universal Audio
  • Valhalla DSP
  • Waves

And just to be clear - the issue was not happening when I first purchased the M1 Mac Mini (January 2021) and I have been using all of the plugins mentioned above). It just suddenly started happening after a month and a half or two months after.

Can anyone help?

Hi,

I'm not on M1 or even Big Sur but I suggest that the combination of using Rosetta and your extensive Plugin Library could be the culprit.

Check in the Plugin Manager that all plugins are validated. You may want to revalidate running under Rosetta just to be sure. I had to remove several with the move to Catalina due to lagging vendors support. You mention that everything was working back in January. Did anything change? Updates to OSX or Logic? I have noticed an uptick in issues related to MIDI in the past 6 months.

I hope this helps.

Oh, I'm sorry, I should have clarified. I don't have issues with physical MIDI devices. It's the 3rd party virtual instruments that suddenly stops playback. You can litarally not do anything apart from clicking space bar to start playback and then stop, and play again, and stop (not every 0.001 sec, but every let's say 7-10 seconds which is normal when you're doing some editing on a specific section of a song) and suddenly the virtual instruments would not play any sound. No routing on the mixer was changed, no "mute" button or "solo" button were pressed, and even inside the plugin, you can see that it's reacting and if it has output meters like Arturia does, it shows that it actually plays but there's no sound.

But this is not a big deal because logic restart helps. The big deal is the reloading of the session when on rosetta, becasue if I have to restart logic, then I have to wait for the session to load under rosetta 2, and then I have to wait again when it reloades it again, two times (approximately). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

HI,

The reason I was asking is I have seen and resolved multiple MIDI in issues where the MIDI messages were delayed ( 10 - 30 seconds ) and other weirdness. All issues were related to MIDI drivers for the interface and not Logic. If a plugin (Instrument ) is "looking" or waiting for something from the MIDI chain this could be causing issues. Driver compatibility with legacy interfaces ( pre Catalina ) have been the root cause of all sorts of problems.

Prost
