Can't locate AirPods if the case is closed

I don't understand why my AirPods can not be located unless the lid is open. If they are going to go missing they are going to more likely than not going to be closed at the time. They don't connect to Bluetooth unless they are open so how can I locate them? Please help if there is a way.

To attempt to find lost or stolen AirPods, not only do the AirPods not be in their charging case, the following must also be true:

  • Find My iPhone must have been enabled BEFORE they were lost or stolen.
  • The AirPods are within range of your devices (iOS or macOS).
  • They are still charged.
  • The AirPods have not been reset
