Insert pages at the beginning of a document

Oh boy, I hope someone can help me. I’ve just about finished a book in Pages on my MacBook. I need to add in the beginning pages, the title and epigram and all that. Can I insert pages at the beginning of a document? I’ve been trying for hours. 😬😢

Hi Renee,

If your document is Word Processing, you will see this:

Menu > File > Convert to Page Layout

Document Panel > Document Tab > a Tick next to Document Body

Do not change these settings!

Simply click at the top of the document to place the flashing cursor there and type or paste. Whatever you insert at the top will push the existing content down. Insert Page Breaks to create new pages.

If your document is Page Layout, you will see this:

Menu > File > Convert to Word Processing

Document Panel > Document Tab > No Tick next to Document Body

Do not change these settings!

Menu > View > Page Thumbnails.

Click on the topmost Page Thumbnail and Menu > Insert Page.

Let me know if you have questions.

Regards,

Ian.

Of course, that makes so much sense, I should have thought to do that. Instead I look for a way to lock the text and just add the pages. Ugh! I was using google for too long. Thank you for all your help. You've helped me so much more than any other company's help desk/tech help, including the one for which I work.

Thank you so very much!

Hi Renee,

Don't convert the document to Page Layout. You will lose all the body text.

I think that at least some of your photos and graphics are set to Stay on Page. They stay where they are as the existing text is forced down by new content or Page Breaks inserted above.

Select them all (command click on each one) and set Object Placement to Move with Text.

Any improvement?

I hope you are testing these suggestions on a spare copy of your book!

Ian.

Yes. You will need to insert a Section Break at the end of Title, epigram pages. (That will also act as a Page Break.)

Click in the second section (the body of your book) and Document button > Section tab > Headers and Footers > Untick Match previous section. Leave Page Numbering > Format as 1, 2, 3. You will probably want to Start at: 1.

Click in the first section and you can choose Roman numerals for that section.

Hi Ian,

It appears that I am in word processing. Maybe I should convert to layout? I was able to get one blank page (thank you), but when I add another page break it messes up my whole book by moving the text down away from the photos and graphics.

Also, do you know if there is a way to have Roman numerals at the beginning and regular for the text? Maybe I just have to add those in manually.

You've been a big help, I';m sorry I'm still not having success with this. I'm going to keep working on it until I hear back from you.

Thank you!
