iTunes can play my very short, a few seconds long MOV files on my windows 10 PC but anything larger it shows a black screen and only audio comes through. There is no video. What am I doing wrong? I need to offload these from my online storage and can't until I know they will be playable after the fact.
What is the origin of these files? It is possible they are not really compatible with iTunes even though they've been accepted into the library. Try VLC.

Do you mean taken with the iPhone camera? As noted you can use VLC - https://www.videolan.org/ to check that at least something can play the transferred files before you remove them from your phone.
