Can't Turn Off VoiceOver

I can't turn off VoiceOver, which somehow got activated. I have a MacBook Pro with 15.7.2 on it. I have gone to Accessibility and made sure no squares are checked. Whenever I type something, a voice echoes my typing. It's very annoying.

The correct OS is 10.15.7, which has been the OS for some time. I can't update this computer as I don't have enough space, so I have bought a new one. However, I am still using this one.

I must have turned the sound off because the problem persists when I have the sound on. It's odd, as this is an old computer, and I have had never had this problem before.

I rechecked everything in Accessibility, and nothing is checked. I re-started in Safe Mode and the problem persisted. I then re-restarted in regular mode.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Hey jkaands,

It appears that your MacBook Pro is speaking the words of whatever you're typing. Good job on check Accessibility settings, and we're glad to provide assistance.

Have your Mac speak text that’s on the screen - Apple Support -- In Accessibility preferences, did you happen to check System Preferences > Accessibility > Spoken Content to see if "Speak typing feedback" is on?

Download macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Update -- Also, you've listed the macOS your MacBook Pro is currently on as "15.7.2". We aren't seeing this as a macOS Catalina update. This may explain why you're unable to turn this feature off. Can you please confirm the exact macOS for us?

All the best.

Thanks for following up with us, jkaands. It's appreciated. We're sorry we weren't clear regarding the macOS your Mac is currently on. We do have one more step to try.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support -- Restart your Mac in safe mode and see if your Mac speaks what you type. After you've tested, restart your Mac normally and test once again.

Be aware that when you start up in safe mode, your Mac prevents some software, such as startup items, from loading, and it performs a check of your startup disk. Your Mac may take longer to start up because of the check.

Let us know the results when you're able. And we would like to confirm the macOS your MacBook Pro is currently on. You'll find the information under  > About This Mac.

Take care.
