photos changed to exec files

Some photos were Airdropped to my iPad from a friend's iPad. The photos were taken on his iPhone. The photos are fine in my iphoto library on my iPad, but when I open the library on my desktop, the photos can be seen as thumbnails but when you click on them they are exec files and cannot be uploaded to Dropbox (I want to share them with a non-Apple user so I can't use Airdrop) What happened to the photos?

Tony:

Since Mac went to extensions to determine the file type, any file without an extension is assumed to be a unix executable. For example, in terminal when you type 'ls' to show a list of files, you are actually executing a program in a file named ls, note no extension.

If you look at one of these files in the finder, it is given a generic 'exec' icon.

Optimise mac storage is in the photos preferences - icloud tab.

Another question - where is your library stored - in your pictures folder, or somewhere else. If on an external drive, what is the format?

Couple of things to try:

1 - Select the photo, then from the image menu>revert to original.

2 - Try file>export, rather than drag/drop to the desktop.

They already have .HEIC as a file name in Photos app on both my iPad (which is new) and my desktop. I think my desktop Photos just can't read HEIC because it's older and it looks as though there is no way to convert them. Exporting them will have to be done from the iPad until I can update my desktop, it looks to me like. Thanks for help!
