very slow internet connection for iMac

iMac runs very slowly on a high speed internet service, but my MacBook runs fast, as expected.

I did respond via email but you may have missed it. Here is my response to your question.

Everything of importance is in the apple cloud, so I feel no need to backup

FWIW, iCloud is NOT a backup service. It is a syncing service. It is not a true backup.

I would like to delete Western Digital software but can not locate it.

Here it is: /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/WDDiscoveryService.HelperTool .

Yes, starting up, loading apps, even deleting email is all slow. That is equally true for my wife’s iMac (a 2019 model). That is not the case for my laptop.

This is because your specific iMac computers have a standard hard drive and not an SSD like your MacBook. The standard hard drive is very slow. If you use an external SSD and run macOS from that, it will make your iMac 10 to 30 times faster for storage. For more info, instructions, and what external SSD to buy, please read: How to Setup and Use an External SSD as y… - Apple Community.

However, to make sure you are getting good Wi-Fi performance, go to System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi, select your Wi-Fi network, then click "-". Finally, Reconnect to your Wi-Fi connection.

Please remember Wi-Fi speeds and your slow hard drive are separate. For example, if the "Photos" app opens slowly, that is due to the slow hard drive, not your Wi-Fi.

Cheers,

Jack

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful App to diagnose and identify issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Navigate to: https://etrecheck.com and get the free version of EtreCheckPro.
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app. It is often recommended here on Apple Support Communities.
  3. Open EtreCheck, and before running the report, be sure to check “Allow full Drive Access” at the bottom of the EtreCheckPro window.
  4. Run the report, and put it in a post, as seen here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211. We will then examine the report for issues in your Mac.

What else can you suggest?

Jack, You have been very helpful and dead-on right. I've been traveling and just re-focused on the issue. You are right. I foolishly never gave a second thought to the storage technology when buying the iMacs. We have 8 Mac computers across 3 locations, 4 of which are iMacs. Two are SSD and 2 are ATA. What a mistake the ATA purchases were, especially since one was purchased from Apple only 3 months ago. I will consider the external G-Technology you recommended or trade the iMacs in.

BTW - all the Macs are linked and synced (with a shared dropbox backing up all docs). So, in effect, all Macs can back each other up.
